What's the difference between lavender buds and lavender flowers?

Lavender buds are the small, unopened flowers along each stem. As the plant blooms, those buds gradually open into flowers.

Both have their uses, and the stage at which lavender is harvested often depends on the finished product.

For example, lavender for dried bouquets is typically harvested while many buds are still closed, while lavender grown for essential oil is often harvested when more flowers have opened.

Same plant, different stages, different uses. 💜

We cut back the spent blooms around Labor Day to give the plants time to harden off before winter. A month later, we’re finding fresh blooms throughout the field.

We’ll be leaving these blooms alone and letting the plants head into winter undisturbed.
