Our Donors get out of sync with our spring calving program, so we put them into a small fall calving group. All these babies weighed under 5% of mothers weight which is crazy good. We have always bred for easy birth however these babies were sired by a Lundgren bull that is the easiest calving bull of any breed we have never used, including Angus. When used on heifers it’s very common to get 60 lb. calves out of LCR Red Hawk. We really don’t want too small of calves, but these little guys grow like crazy and are scale busters at weaning. All these cows are double bred Ranger.

In the Cattle Industry it seems way too common for breeders to promote their cattle as “one size fits all” I am thinking about this because we went miles today trying to find cows and took this pic when we finally found a few. If these ladies ever tasted silage they would probably pass out. Our cattle run on rugged Montana range year-round with no shelter ever. I know that a dairy cow would die in a month trying to survive on this range. I wonder how compatible beef genetics are when they are selected for beef production in an area where there are dairy cows grazing across the fence. Seems like these are unproven genetics for a range area like ours. Likewise, when a genetic line is developed over decades of selecting for range efficiency, they are basically unproven genetics for areas of readily available feedstuffs such as the East and Midwest.
I don’t have an answer other than to say that our genetic development should match the environment we serve.
