Have taken no farm pictures so far this week. To busy planting, weeding harvesting, washing and building.

But, just a reminder that farmstand is open today-Friday with all our veggies and loads of plants.

And as a space filler, a picture of our family Easter tradition, THE Bunny Cake and also a real bunny nest I found while weeding the carrots yesterday 😬

Auntie Patricia, the littlest of the seven sisters, came to help yesterday. So excited for our new cousin coming in June, but will miss her out here as much once she has that sweet baby to take care of!

A new customer stopped by yesterday to check us out, asked about our name and said that in folklore a family with seven sisters is know to be psychic… well, Micahel does always say that we are something of witches.

Definitely is a special spiritual bond. 💜✨

Hi folks!

I guess market season is upon us! We have a few pretty things headed to @southendmarketclt tomorrow morning and will open the farm stand(April 13th) and be back @uptownfarmersmarket (April 16th) before you know it!

We are sliding into the season slower this year because we took on many projects for the future years to come, and there are only so many hours in a day.

But, for continued updates on the farm, are markets and products, I will be restarting our weekly newsletter, so check the link In our profile to sign-up!

Not too hard to find some green around here these days!

Happy (late) St. Patrick’s Day from this Irish girl that spends way too much time in the sun!

☘️ St. Patrick’s Breastplate☘️

I bind this day to me for ever.
By power of faith, Christ's incarnation;
His baptism in the Jordan river;
His death on Cross for my salvation;
His bursting from the spicèd tomb;
His riding up the heavenly way;
His coming at the end of days;
I bind unto myself today.

I bind unto myself today
The power of God to hold and lead,
His eye to watch, His might to stay,
His ear to hearken to my need.
The wisdom of my God to teach,
His hand to guide, His shield to ward,
The word of God to give me speech,
His heavenly host to be my guard.

Christ be with me, Christ within me,
Christ behind me, Christ before me,
Christ beside me, Christ to win me,
Christ to comfort and restore me.
Christ beneath me, Christ above me,
Christ in quiet, Christ in danger,
Christ in hearts of all that love me,
Christ in mouth of friend and stranger.

I bind unto myself the Name,
The strong Name of the Trinity;
By invocation of the same.
The Three in One, and One in Three,
Of Whom all nature hath creation,
Eternal Father, Spirit, Word:
Praise to the Lord of my salvation,
Salvation is of Christ the Lord.

So close to final bed prep before the rain pushed me out and I had to tarp the field and leave it. But on the positive note, I’ve shared some photos from our soon-to-be robust fields of fresh fruits and vegetables. This land has continuously improved each year and we are still finding ways to manage it better. #neverstoplearning

Still in winter-reflection mode, but must prepare for spring and summer. We have buried down on farm renovations this winter to streamline our processes and cut unnecessary cost…(more pictures of these improvements soon).
For now, we just want to say “our greenhouses and high tunnels are at their most productive state to date and it won’t be long until our hill-top fields will be bursting with fruits, roots, leaves, stalks, sprouts, flowers and bees.

Green leaf lettuce harvested today in the high tunnel! We planted this seedling (variety: “grazion”) on November 21st. The high tunnel was an unheated house with two layers of 6 mil plastic. It’s Amazing how hearty these guys were and brought us yet another step towards offering produce all year round. Definitely on the list of “to do more of” next winter. #smallscaleagriculture #fourseasonfarming #locallygrown

For those of us who are blessed enough to have wives who work alongside us on “mom and pap” farms, you know how lost you’d be without her. She could have had any life she wanted. As her father says “she should’ve been a lawyer.” What an ass-kicker she would have been. She’s the grit of the farm and the pace-setter. She’s honest and true to core. She raises three young men on our farm, the veggies just pay the bills. Happy Birthday Janice Staley Parker Fine.

A farm is a force of nature in itself, a living, dynamic organism. A creature composed of our cursed, but beautiful, earth and a broken, but beloved community of humans.

Through our years of building, toiling, growing and living, God has been teaching us to slow down, open our eyes and hands, and let Him expand our horizons and ideas beyond what we think is the “right”way.

Set simpler goals and let Him direct our path there.

We aren’t the fastest learners, but we are learning to take joy In the journey.

Heating a greenhouse that is at half capacity essentially doubles your heat bill per plant. To address this, seal off all the unused real estate in your greenhouse. Make sure your ventilation fan still services your enclosure and don’t spend too much energy on permanent aesthetics. In a couple of weeks, more trays will occupy the remaining shelves and the enclosures will come down. #leanfarming #plantsale

#FarmFeatureFriday As a child we all have dreams of becoming something big when we grow up, like a rockstar, veterinarian or doctor. At the age of three, Janice Fine, owner of The Seven Sisters Farm, drew a picture that said ‘when I grow up I want to be a farmer’ and the journey began. Janie and her husband Michael met in college at NC State University when they were both studying natural resource management. “I grew up in a family that grew produce for a living so I have known it all my life,” she said, “but Michael discovered his true passion for agriculture while working for a produce box distribution company in college where he met many farmers and industry workers.” Located in Denton, Seven Sisters Farm focuses on feeding families and satisfying their customers through a diversity of products. “Product diversity is really our goal because we are a retail farm who sells directly to our consumers and we try to have something for everyone,” Janice said. Not only do they have a variety of fruits and vegetables available each year, including leafy greens, root crops, Asian greens, strawberries and asparagus, but they also grow flowers and have recently added livestock to the mix. “I worked for a greenhouse in college and absolutely loved it, so growing the herbs and flowers is a way that I can continue to utilize that knowledge and passion,” she said, “this year I am excited to try doing cut flowers for the first time and seeing how our customers react.” A typical day on the farm depends highly on the season, but usually involves a variety of tasks from harvesting crops to taking care of animals and maintenance work. “Starting in May, we are harvesting in the fields at dawn while the weather is still cool to ensure the best quality product,” said Janice, “then the afternoons are spent prepping for the farmers market or running our on-site farm stand before we circle back around to the evening chores.” Although the uncertainty of farming can be tough for a planner like Janice, she loves being outside and working in a job where there is always another chance to get things right. “Farming is a forgiving field to be in because even when you mess up, there is another season right around the corner where you can try again,” she said, “and it’s incredibly rewarding to provide products to people and see the fruits of your labor.” In addition to their farm stand on-site, products from Seven Sisters Farm can be found at the Uptown Farmers Market in Charlotte and the Southend Farmers Market. They also offer farm share boxes to interested customers in the Lexington and Salisbury areas. “We are offering two boxes this year to provide more seasonality in our box offerings,” Janice said, “there are typically six to ten products in a box and more information can be found about them on our website.” Janice loves to grocery shop for her family at their farm stand and, although she loves all their products, her favorites are tomatoes, squash and strawberries. “Farmers rely on their local community and economy so it really does make a difference when you purchase local products,” she said, “not only are those products going to be more stable, but by purchasing from local farmers, you are ensuring that those products you love will continue to be there in the years to come.” In the future, Seven Sisters Farm hopes to expand their livestock operation to include goats and pigs as well as buildup the farm stand to diversify the enterprise and offer more products to their customers. “We will always keep our eyes open for what people want and need,” Janice said, “we want to make it a place that our customers know they can count on and continue to come back to on a regular basis.” When they are not farming, you can find Janice and Michael enjoying time with their children and teaching them about the family farm. #NCAgriculture

This week, we've been Drinking Local with two seasonal Cocktails featuring the hard apple cider from my friends at James Creek Cider House James Creek is in Cameron NC and their award winning array of seasonal ciders are all made with their own hand picked Heirloom Apples grown in an orchard just miles from the cidery. I originally work with James Creek's Ann Marie Thorton to developed the recipes for these cocktails for a private Team Building Cooking and Cocktail-ing class I taught this week via Zoom. But, we've been drinking them ever since! Don't mind if I do say so myself, these recipes are certainly two seasonal keepers! As is always the case in my camp, each Recipe features a host of Local Ingredients In the first glass we have the "James Creek Stone Fence" with Muddy River Distillery 's Queen Charlotte Rum, James Creek Stargazer Cider , Shooting Star and Savory Spice Shop Saigon Cinnamon on the rim and in the mix. In the second glass, the "James Creek Spicy Orange Harvest Moon" with Cloister Honey Arbol Pepper Honey , James Creek Cider's Harvest Moon and TOPO Organic Distillery 's Vodka. This glass is garnished with Orange , Mint from my garden and a candied The Seven Sisters Farm Roselle blossom -( you can find these at the South End Market at Atherton and the Uptown Farmers Market in Charlotte. Stay tuned for tips on how to candy your own) ! Tip of the hat to mixologist Ev Clark at @counter- in Charlotte for the idea of the cool orange peel garnish

#WomenOwnedWednesday was created in 2016 as a response to all the other shopping/giving days during the holiday season. This is a space to find women-owned businesses, with a goal to promote economic justice for women. Great Folks!! Support Your Local Farmers!!
Thank You Mike and Family!! NATIONAL FARMER’S DAY A day of honor is very much deserved to all of the hard-working farmers. National Farmer’s Day is observed annually on October 12th as a day for them and to pay tribute to all farmers throughout American history. National Farmer’s Day was previously known as Old Farmer’s Day. From very early in American culture, a farmer’s endless hard work has been an example to all of us, and on National Farmer’s Day, we thank them for their contributions to our economy. There are some cities and towns across the United States that have their own versions of Farmer’s Day, with celebrations and festivals on various dates throughout the year. Many of them are held in September and October. October does seem fitting for celebrating this National Day as it is near the end of the harvest. Many farmers will be able to take a rest from their hard labor to join in the celebration of this holiday. HOW TO OBSERVE Thank a farmer for the hard work they do to supply us with food.
Winter Harvest Box 10: Thanks everyone for participating in Winter Harvest this year! Thanks also to all of our farmers and producers: Red Barn Market / Correll Farms LLC. , Two Pigs Farm, Alexander Acres, Kurt Weddington, Spring Lake Family Farms, The Fine Farming Company, Sandy Creek, Blue Goat Dairy, Upside Down Farms, DewDrop Farms, How Sweet It Is, Better Loafing Artisan Bread Company, Larry Pruett, Teachers Can Too, Barbee Farms, Hutchens Homestead, Father & Sons, MikNik Flour/cornmeal, Brushy Mountain apples... whew!
