Kevin’s apartment was silent most of the day.
But at 10:15 AM and 2 PM—the exact times my newborn napped—his “cleaning music” suddenly shook the walls.
My husband said stress might be making me hallucinate.
The pattern proved otherwise.
Every. Single. Nap.
I was three weeks postpartum, sleeping in broken stretches that totaled around ninety minutes a night. My husband spent fourteen hours at work each day.
Our baby’s grandparents weren’t nearby, and we had no nanny.
I lived for the forty-five minutes when my little boy slept. It was the only opening I had to shower, eat something, or cry until I could function again.
Then Kevin would erase that small relief.
He was a self-proclaimed musician who said he needed an enormous speaker to accompany him while he “cleaned.”
Some days brought pounding bass. Other days, the crashes came from an acoustic drum kit.
He could remain quiet at noon. He could remain quiet at 6 PM.
But somehow, he became loud at exactly 10:15 AM or 2:00 PM, when my son was settling into sleep.
Unable to take any more, I knocked on Kevin’s door with tears still shining on my cheeks.
He looked at me and smirked.
“I can’t clean without music. I have a right to enjoy my own apartment.”
I asked my husband to stand up for us. He shrugged because Kevin was never making noise when his shift ended and he arrived home.
Then he suggested that postpartum stress had caused me to imagine it.
Last Tuesday, my baby’s eyelids finally closed after another difficult morning.
Within a second, Kevin’s speaker blasted through the wall.
I crumpled beside the hallway, sobbing until my chest throbbed, and called my best friend, Maya.
She listened to my breathless panic for five minutes.
Then her soothing voice became eerily controlled.
“Clara,” she said, “he picked a fight with the wrong mother. Give me twenty-four hours.”
Before I could form a question, she hung up.
At 4:55 the next morning, my phone buzzed with her message:
"Look out your front window. And whatever you do — do NOT laugh loudly. You'll wake the baby."⬇️
