📚🍿 COMMUNITY MOVIE NIGHT IS BACK!

We’re kicking off the new school year with Akeelah and the Bee, a story about brilliance, perseverance, community, and believing in our young people.

But before the feature, we’re shining a light on Detroit’s own creative voices with a special screening of the short film To Move in My Mother’s Prayers by local filmmaker Diop Russell . 🎬✨

Join us at The Joy Project for an evening where film, food, and community come together. Come early, bring your favorite chair or blanket, and grab a bite from Chef Ederique Goudia & Chi Walker before settling in for the films.

🍽️ Soul Food & Soundtrack Sundays 🍷🎞️

Some movies don’t just tell a story. They season an entire generation.

This Sunday, we’re gathering around the table for Soul Food (1997), the iconic film that reminds us family is complicated, recipes are sacred, and love is often passed from one plate to the next.

To bring the evening to life, we’re thrilled to welcome Guest Chef Franchesca Lamarre of (ah-ee-tee) 🇭🇹🍝 , whose food honors the deep connections between Haitian and Black American culinary traditions. Expect a menu that celebrates heritage, memory, and the conversations that only happen when everyone finally sits down to eat.

Detroit… it’s HOT. 🥵 And between these temperatures and the air quality, we’re giving everybody permission to move a little slower this weekend. Drink your water, check on your people, and if you’re venturing out, come let us do the cooking.

This Sunday we’re back with Soulfood & Soundtrack Sundays, where the food is soulful, the soundtrack is right, and this week’s feature film is Boomerang. Because honestly… there are few things better than watching Eddie Murphy in his prime with a full plate in your lap.

We’re also beyond grateful that Soulfood & Soundtrack Sundays has been selected for inclusion in the NOVA24 | Photo + Film Festival Photo + Film Festival. What started as an idea around food, film, and fellowship has grown into something bigger than expected and it’s all for you. Thank you for showing up week after week and making this little corner of Detroit feel like home.

A huge thank you to our partners Lowkey Cinema and Cinema Lamont for helping bring this series to life and believing in the magic of gathering around a table and a screen.

See y’all Sunday. Bring your appetite, your favorite movie quote, and maybe a fan. It’s giving hot outside… but the vibes will be even hotter.
