WE JUST HIT ANOTHER BIG MILESTONE!

Over the weekend we surpassed 27,000 followers. Thank you for your support, for being here, and for allowing us to do what we do. More importantly, thanks for supporting all the local businesses that we write about, promote, and believe in.

We aren’t the biggest page in the area by a long shot, and our content is incredibly niche, but we love that we have almost 30,000 of you here following us.

It’s far from an overnight success; we’ve been slogging away at this for coming up on 10 years this January, but we truly love what we do and are grateful for every one of you, whether you have been here from the beginning or you just discovered us this weekend. Cheers to 27k!

🦪🍺 CLAMBAKE SEASON IS HERE — AND THESE ONES COME WITH A CRAFT-BEVERAGE CONNECTION.

Few fall traditions feel more Northeast Ohio than steaming clams, chowder, chicken, corn and potatoes. Even better when the gathering happens at a local brewery, winery or neighborhood beverage destination.

Here are eight upcoming clambakes worth putting on your calendar:

🦪 Hoppin' Frog Brewery — Akron
Saturday, Sept. 12 • seatings at 1, 3:30 and 6 PM
Choose from the $60 traditional bake, $80 premium bake or $110 snow-crab package—all inside one of Northeast Ohio’s most acclaimed breweries.

🍷 Ferrante Winery & Ristorante — Geneva
Sundays, Sept. 13, 20 and 27 • 2–5 PM • $37.50
Ferrante’s first patio Clam Boil features 12 clams, 12 mussels, andouille sausage, corn and potatoes beside the winery’s new firepits and outdoor tasting bar. Reservations required; wine sold separately.

🍺 Cleveland Maennerchor — Cleveland
Saturday, Sept. 19 • doors at 5 PM; dinner 6–7:30 PM • $30

🥃 SPIRITS SATURDAY: YOU KNOW WOOSTER FOR BEER. BUT HAVE YOU TRIED ITS WHISKEY?

Wooster has earned plenty of attention for its craft-beer scene, namely award winning JAFB Wooster Brewery.

But tucked inside a former coal-and-ice operation on East South Street, a father-and-son team is quietly reviving another piece of Wayne County beverage history.

🥃 Minglewood Distilling Co. began distilling in 2016, with Mark and Andrew Morrison turning the historic Minglewood property into a small-batch distillery, tasting room and event space.

And this isn’t merely whiskey bottled in Wooster.

Minglewood sources its corn from roughly five minutes outside the city, its rye from nearby Dalton and its wheat from a cooperative in Seville.

That local rye carries some history, too.

Cedar Valley Distilling Company once produced rye whiskey in Wooster on a significant scale—reportedly reaching 25 barrels per day during its late-1800s peak. Minglewood is now bringing that nearly forgotten Wayne County distilling tradition back to life, one small batch at a time.

Its current whiskey collection runs much deeper than you might expect:

There’s also a special 250th Anniversary Bourbon among its current offerings.

The flavored whiskeys may be the easy gateway—Peach has historically been its biggest seller—but serious whiskey drinkers should pay particular attention to those bottled-in-bond, double-oaked and wheated expressions.

Minglewood’s Bottle Shop is located at 437 E. South St. in Wooster and is currently open Fridays from 4–8 PM and Saturdays from noon–8 PM, with tastings and tours also available.

So the next time you make a Wooster beer run, don’t automatically make your last stop another brewery.

🍺🎸 WAIT… A CRAFT BREWERY HELPED BRING ALABAMA SHAKES BACK TOGETHER?!

Alabama Shakes just released their first new album in 11 years.

And believe it or not, a small independent brewery in Tuscaloosa, Alabama helped set the whole thing in motion.

The story starts with Bo Hicks, co-founder of Druid City Brewing Company.

Hicks reached out to Alabama Shakes frontwoman Brittany Howard about playing a benefit to help support the brewery and a local food pantry.

There was history there.

Long before the Grammys and international success, Hicks had supported the members of Alabama Shakes during their early days.

So Howard said yes.

Then she called guitarist Heath Fogg and bassist Zac Cockrell and asked if they wanted to get together and rehearse some Alabama Shakes songs.

They did. And something clicked.

🍺 A brewery benefit turned into rehearsals.
🎸 Rehearsals turned into a reunion.
🎶 The reunion turned into writing new music.

💿 And now Alabama Shakes have released “I Must Be Dreaming,” their first album since 2015.

Howard told the Associated Press that everything simply began to “snowball” after the band started playing together again.

It’s a pretty incredible reminder that breweries can be a lot more than places where beer gets made.

They can become music venues (Penguin City - Youngstown, OH, Fretboard Brewing)

Community gathering places.

Places that support artists before everyone else knows their names (BIRDFISH BREWING CO. / The Vindys).

And apparently…

places where Grammy-winning bands find their way back to each other. 🍺🎸

🍺🐸 20 YEARS OF HOPPIN’ FROG: How a Small Akron Brewery Built a Global Reputation

There are breweries that get bigger. And then there are breweries that get farther.

Twenty years ago, Hoppin' Frog Brewery opened in Akron with Fred Karm behind the brewhouse and a simple philosophy:

Make big, distinctive, uncompromising beer — and don’t worry about trends.

Two decades later, Hoppin’ Frog beer is distributed in 22 states and 40 countries. You read that right. Forty countries. From Akron, Ohio.

🐸 THE FROG BEFORE THE FROG

Hoppin’ Frog opened in 2006, but Karm’s brewing career began in 1994. He was also the original master brewer at Thirsty Dog Brewing Co.

Hoppin’ Frog was built around flavor, not massive production. Its specially designed brewing system allows the brewery to use more barley, reflecting its obsessive approach to ingredients and process.

That philosophy helped put Hoppin’ Frog on the map with B.O.R.I.S. The Crusher, an Oatmeal Imperial Stout that won GABF gold in 2008 and 2011. Its barrel-aged version won World Beer Cup gold in 2012. The accolades only continued to roll in from there:

No national taproom empire. No satellite breweries. No giant beverage conglomerate. Just an Ohio brewery whose bottles kept traveling farther from home.

Hoppin’ Frog built something different: A reputation.

🥃🔥 HOT TAKE FRIDAY: Bourbon collecting has become more about owning bottles than drinking bourbon.

At some point, bourbon culture became as much about the hunt as what’s in the glass:

The allocated drop.
The bottle you waited three hours for.
The impossible-to-find Weller.
The Blanton’s horse you needed.
The limited release left unopened because it’s “too hard to replace.”

Collecting is part of the fun, but if you have dozens—or hundreds—of bottles you’re afraid to open…

Are you still a bourbon drinker, or are you a bourbon collector?

Bourbon was made to be poured, shared with friends, compared side-by-side, or used in an Old Fashioned—not preserved like a museum exhibit.
