All of a sudden, everything is buzzing with the delicate, fresh GREEN of early spring. Over the last two weeks, I’ve been potting up the starts that many of you will plant in your gardens next month. They will have another three weeks here at the farm to grow their roots and put on more foliage and then it will be your turn to care for them. To watch them climb toward the sun and bloom. You’ll harvest their stems and enjoy them placed in glass pitchers and tiny bud vases all over your house. You’ll probably share with friends, with your neighbor, with your mom. You will marvel at their beauty.

These are the thoughts I have as I stand in the greenhouse and delicately press hundreds and hundreds of tiny seedlings into the soil.

This might be the best job I ever had.

March is a very “in between” season. In astrology, the time between the end of February and now is ruled by the “mutable” water sign of Pisces - liquid and adaptable. At the end of one season, we’re often ready to take the shape of the next season. I find that March, out of all the months really, holds the most anticipation for me. But not without that frantically uncomfortable tug of being in between. Some days feel so Wintery, like Spring is still a long way off. Some days offer the warm glimmer of what’s next. Tiny green shoots poking up out of the ground, the cherry blossoms that line the road in town bursting into bloom, practically out of nowhere.

This week I wrapped up a house painting job I’ve been doing since October. Did you know I’m a house painter? Sometimes I am. The house is just up the road and belongs to a dear friend of mine. The cedar shingle roof was severely damaged by a fire years ago and the entire house had to be gutted. Appliances and butcher block were tucked away in the barn along with most of its original chestnut doors and trim, which were painstakingly salvaged, labeled, and stored until this past fall. Week after week, we whittled away at the (at times) overwhelming to-do list required to put an entire house back together again.

NEW THIS WEEK: In addition to our Curated Cut Flower Gardens, we will also offer a limited number of NATURAL DYE GARDENS, ready for pickup in early May. These have been in the works (read: in my brain) for awhile and I’m jazzed to get some amazing pigment-producing plants into your hands and gardens. These flats will contain 36+ starts, in 6 annual varieties, along with some seeds for a variety or two that prefer to be direct seeded in the garden, as is the case for Hopi Black Dye Sunflower. My aim is to provide folks with an abundant amount of plant material to introduce them to the amazing world of natural dye, where experiments abound and possibilities are endless. It’s that science and magic thing again, y’all.

I’ve been taking a much needed break from socials this month but I had to hop on and share this bridal bouquet I made yesterday for Tim’s cousin’s wedding featuring some gorgeous anemone from !!! Tom and Sarah have been experimenting with growing various types of flowers in their new aquaponic system (remember those French marigolds and cosmos from Thanksgiving??!) and these anemone were a SUCCESS. Scroll through to see them in all their glory. And to see what it looks like when it’s January and I have to transform my kitchen into a flower studio 🤪.

This is the time of year on a farm when there are lots of expenses (seeds, bulbs, supplies, soil amendments) and typically not much income. So when you purchase *future flowers* (or veggies!!) from your local growers, you help bridge that gap.

While the fields at Rocklands have already been hit, my home garden has been spared thus far. I’ve spent some time this week cutting and drying all my favorites for winter-time making and dyeing. Celosia, gomphrena, marigold, indigo, peppers, and calendula.

The earliest double tulips we grow are ready this week, y’all! Order online and pickup today or tomorrow - while you’re there, grab some amazing natural wine (partial to the Anna’s Rosé and Sungold labels myself😜).

The perfect pale buttery yellow with a delicate honey-like scent, these will grow and bloom in the vase and typically last at least 7 days!

Tulip Avant Garde is comin’ on QUICK. The perfect creamy white with a delicate scent that reminds me of wildflower honey. We will probably do a *CROP DROP* for these beauties in the next few days as they continue to color up.
