'We must learn to walk, before we can run'

Hands up, who has ever done a schooling session just in walk?

Many people seems so quick to have their horses trotting these days. I observe people on yards and at competitions and no sooner have they entered the arena, one lap and they’re in trot. I see horses lunge and they go in to trot without even considering the walk.

When I tell clients all I want them to do is walk, I’m often looked at like I have 2 heads.

Walk is a really important gait that most horses cannot do correctly. Establish a good walk and the rest of your paces will flourish. But why is this?

Walk is a 4 beat gait that requires the horse to plant the limb and move its full body weight over the top of that limb before lifting off again, unlike the trot and canter where momentum is used. This means all the muscle groups have to come in to play as the limb is taken through a full range of motion and there is less room for cheating.

In walk we can help teach the horse how to achieve relaxation. If tension occurs at any gait it will jeopodise the correct biomechanics and will subject the horse to a higher risk of injury due to the body working incorrectly. If a horse cannot walk without tension, it most definitely cannot trot or canter without tension.

Walk will help strengthen your horse. By allowing your horse to actively walk in a relaxed frame you are assisting it in using its body correctly. Relaxation through the neck will get the thoracic sling firing and switch off that pesky tight Iliopsoas which will hinder any hind limb engagement if not working correctly.

I have people tell me their horse cannot trot without looking like a giraffe with its head in the air, my first question, how’s the walk? Your horse is telling you that he is not strong enough in the muscles he has to be able to trot correctly. If their head is up, they are bracing for support. Don’t reach for the gadgets, take a step back and teach him to walk.

Here is a check list to work through each time you school your horse. If they can’t do that specific exercise, you need to take a step back and not move on to the next step until the current step is easily achieved.

❓Can your horse relax with you stood in their company?
❓Can your horse move from standing to walk without developing tension (body bracing, head & neck coming up)?
❓Can your horse maintain walk without developing tension?
❓Can your horse move in to the trot without developing tension?
❓Can your horse maintain trot without developing tension?
❓Can your horse move in to the canter without developing tension?
❓Can your horse maintain canter without developing tension?

This needs to be achievable in hand before considering it under saddle. The chances are this is not how your horse was started so it may require you to go right back to the beginning.

You may get days where you can achieve all of the above, or days where you’re stuck at number 1. That’s ok, but don’t push beyond the no tension level as the work produced will be biomechanically dysfunctional.

Many people tell me their horse must be ‘working’ in their sessions. Have you ever done pilates? You spend most the time standing still, but cant walk the next day. Static or slow movements performed correctly are very hard for a body that isn’t used to it. There’s no point focusing on the faster gaits if the posture is all wrong, we will only train dysfunction.

We must learn to walk before we can run.

So true! Our horses get everything needed to perform their best ! Quality vet care and farrier care , magnawave , bodywork , etc!

✍️

There is something veterinarily imperfect about most horses who have been through training. Training leaves evidence in the body. And athletes occasionally get hurt. Maintenance, like joint injections, Adequan or Legend, etc, is not evidence of a problem being covered; it’s evidence of someone giving a damn and helping their horse feel their best while trained. I am neither shocked by, nor afraid of, a horse that’s received maintenance in its journey up the levels. I am deeply afraid of horses whose ads claim “needs no maintenance!,” because I do not believe that to be true - I believe it has RECEIVED no maintenance.

California Girl - 11 yr old , 14h grey Dartmoor pony mare

cali is absolutely adorable and a XC machine! She is a lovely mover and a bold, scopey jumper! She started off her eventing career winning her first BN with a 29 and is consistently scoring in the 20's/low 30s in dressage. She is solid at the novice level with a junior rider and is starting to school training. Cali definitely has the scope and ability to move up! She is forward thinking, so not for a beginner, but would be an outstanding event pony for a small adult or a junior with some experience. She jumps anything you point her at and loves eventing! Low 5s starting with a 2

Max's Painted Moon - 13 yr old , 15.3h solidly built gelding. Chewy is the complete unicorn packer !!! He's happy teaching people how to jump crossrails and also very successful eventing BN to Training level. Chewy is ready to move up to modified and has the scope and ability for prelim / CCI** easily ! He is currently eventing training level consistently scoring upper 20s / low 30s in dressage , careful in the SJ , and a XC machine. He is easy to ride and has several times went to derbies showing both elem and training level in the same day with different riders. He has the best temperament and adjusts himself to whoever is riding him. He would be happy teaching someone how to event from the beginning up or would also suit someone wanting to jump right in at training level and move up in the future. Great show record and consistently in the ribbons. Easy keeper , no vices , no soundness issues / no maintenance, great feet , and currently lives out ( but is fine in a stall as well ). Very suitable and ANY junior , young rider , or adult amateur! He's a barn favorite and taught many people to event ! mid 5s. Located in Dickerson , Maryland at Destination Farm.

We are excited about the courses laid out by our new course designer and the new and refurbished XC obstacles and spiffed up stadium jumps; we can’t wait for you to see for yourself. Additionally, unless mother nature provides some assistance, dressage, stadium and XC tracks will be aerated/aggravated prior to the event.
BUT we need you to enter! To entice you to join us, we are now waiving our late entry fee (change fees still apply). (Due to the vagaries of USEF scheduling, we find ourselves with much lower entries than normal.) Please consider entering, thereby allowing us to continue to provide horsemanship education to our members. (If you have already submitted a late entry, we will refund you the late fee.)

: Know when to hold ‘em and know when to fold ‘em. If you’re bringing a bad day into the barn, maybe go for a hack. If your horse seems uncharacteristically sour, do light work or just go for a stroll. There’s nothing on your training program that has to be done today, or it won’t get done - you have time. Breaks are productive. And being the best steward of your animal means listening to them, even when they need a break at a time that doesn’t suit you. It’s a partnership! 🤝

Help Save the Beebe Ranch
Home of Misty of Chincoteague :

Press Release
For Immediate Release
Chincoteague Island is fortunate to have visitors come from around the world to enjoy the untampered seashore, amazing wildlife, and quaint historical downtown. Many of those visitors also come because of "Misty of Chincoteague" a book published in 1947 by Marguerite Henry that inspired millions. "Misty of Chincoteague" tells the against-the-odds story of two siblings Paul and Maureen Beebe. These two children lived on the ranch with their grandparents, Clarence and Ida Beebe (affectionately called Grandma and Grandpa Beebe in the story). The charming story centers on the children's desire to buy the wild pony of their dreams and the challenges they faced to make that dream a reality. It is a heartwarming tale that made the Beebe family, Misty and the Beebe Ranch a beloved part of the literary world.

After 100 years, the Beebe family need to sell the ranch. The demands of maintaining the ranch plus the desire to use the funds to help their aging family is certainly a good enough reason to sell. We appreciate all they have done to preserve the remaining 10.3 acres of the ranch. This property is where Misty spent most of her life, and the original home still stands. The Beebe family has reached out to the Museum of Chincoteague in the hopes that the museum could acquire the property and maintain it as the ranch. Allowing it to be incorporated into the museum, would help protect it for many years to come. Because of the circumstances, the museum has been given one month to see if they can generate the funds to purchase the property.

The mission of the Museum of Chincoteague Island is to preserve, collect and protect the history of Chincoteague and Assateague Island. It is with this mission in mind that we would like to ask the public to join us to save the Beebe Ranch. If we can raise the funds in what can only be called a colossal, grassroots effort, we can preserve the ranch for future generations, keep a treasured part of Chincoteague intact and support the mission of the museum to protect our history, making the Beebe Ranch an officially an extension of the museum. Since we have been given one month to generate the funds, please understand that this can’t be done without you!

We are asking you to consider making a tax-deductible donation to the Museum of Chincoteague Island.
Our goal is $625,000. The family has already been given an offer by a developer for that amount. If we are not successful in raising our goal, the donor will be able to decide if they would like their donation returned.
The Museum of Chincoteague Island's mailing address is PO Box 352 Chincoteague, Va 23336 if you are interested in sending a check. Donations can also be made through our website http://chincoteaguemuseum.com or Go-fund-Me: https://gofund.me/bd12d625
******Please note that our info might say "Oyster Museum dba Museum of Chincoteague Island" but that is still accurate*****
Together we can make this happen!!!!

Congrats to Sarah Greenway on the purchase of Playful Sunrise! Best of luck in your future endeavors!
