๐ Back in the Lab!
After a short break, it's time to get things moving again.
One of my goals over the past few months has been getting a better feel for local demand. Thanks to the support from local restaurants and everyone following along here, it's time to ramp production up and settle into a more consistent growing schedule.
Today's project was expanding fully colonized grain into fresh Master's Mix blocks. Each grain kernel is covered with healthy mycelium, and once it's mixed throughout the substrate, every kernel becomes a tiny inoculation point. Instead of the mycelium spreading from just one location, it's now growing from hundreds of points throughout the bag, allowing the entire block to colonize much more quickly.
I also used some of that fully colonized grain to inoculate fresh grain. One of the advantages of healthy grain spawn is that it allows me to expand cultures without having to start over from agar or liquid culture every single time, helping keep the production cycle moving.
This batch includes 13 Blue Oyster blocks and 10 Lion's Mane blocks, and now it's time to let the mycelium do the hard work.
If everything goes as planned, I'm hoping to have the Blue Oysters heading into the fruiting room in about a week, with fresh harvests beginning roughly a week after that. Lion's Mane usually takes a little longer, but it won't be far behind.
For the local restaurants that have reached out, thank you for your patience. Building a consistent production schedule has been one of my biggest goals, and I'm excited to finally be getting into that rhythm.
Next up: watching these blocks turn completely white as the mycelium colonizes the substrate before they head into the fruiting room. That's when things really start to get exciting.
Thanks for following along!
