Caught up on harvesting this morning and we had lots of BIG cucumbers, a handful of zucchini, and a few peppers hiding in the garden. Time to make some pickles and zucchini bread! 😅

Today was the day! We harvested 32 heads of garlic this morning and several of them were as big as my palm! 🧄 😲

We’re thrilled with this year’s garlic harvest! 🙌 Now they’ll rest on wire racks in our garage for a few weeks to cure before we put them into long term storage. We’re optimistic that this will be a year’s supply of garlic for our family! 👏

Have you harvested your garlic yet?

Getting carrots to sprout in the summer heat can be challenging! 🥵 This year, I’m trying the “cardboard method” in my raised bed. By laying a clean piece of cardboard over my newly sown rows, I’m creating the perfect, moist microclimate to keep those tiny seeds from drying out before they even get a chance to grow.

I’ll be checking daily, and the moment I see those first tiny green sprouts, the cardboard comes off! It’s such a simple, budget-friendly way to ensure a great fall harvest. Have you ever tried this? Let me know your favorite “homestead hacks” for tricky seeds! 👩‍🌾

A little space goes a long way. 🧅✨

Ever wonder why your onions are staying small? Try clearing the soil away from the bulb—it’s called “spooning,” and it’s the secret to getting those big, beautiful bulbs. Happy growing!

Thanks for the tip, RuthAnn Zimmerman!

I was planting beans in the garden this morning and took the opportunity to give a little garden tour/update. I think it’s really interesting to watch garden tour videos from different growing zones to see how much things differ. What’s happening in your garden right now? Share in the comments!

Finding our rhythm with homestead chores 🌿✨

When we first thought about introducing chores, we started with the classics—like making beds every morning. But it quickly became clear that it just wasn’t clicking. It felt abstract, and honestly, not very meaningful to them.

So, we shifted our approach. We started looking for small, functional ways to weave them into the daily rhythm of our homestead. And this week? They’re crushing it!

From watering plants and planting seeds to prepping herbs for the dehydrator, feeding our puppy, sorting laundry, organizing silverware, and unloading groceries—they are showing up in big ways. Today’s project was clearing out the bolted lettuce and tackling the heavy compost bin lid. Moving those big rocks was a challenge, but they did it!

We’re learning to always presume competence, demonstrate with endless patience, and build their strength and confidence one small task at a time. Of course, a mountain of praise (and a little allowance) goes a long way, too. ❤️

If you’re struggling to find a routine that works for your uniquely wired kiddos, this is your reminder to think outside the box. Sometimes “chores” look less like tidy bedrooms and more like dirt on our hands and teamwork in the garden.

“To plant a garden is to believe in tomorrow.” — Audrey Hepburn

We’re out here trying to pass down deep generational knowledge and connection to the land...but sometimes the garden reminds us exactly how kids see the world. 🌱 🌍

Yesterday evening, Brian was showing Owen our potato patch and explaining how the Wendy’s french fries he loves actually start right there in the dirt. Oliver was semi-eavesdropping nearby.

A few minutes later, we were quizzing the boys to see if they could identify the different crops in the garden. We pointed to the potato bed and asked Oliver what was growing there. Without missing a beat, he proudly announced: “The french fry plant!” 🍟 😂

Between identifying the fast-food flora, learning how to manage the hose, and harvesting some garlic scape “glasses”, it was a pretty perfect evening of growing food and growing memories.

Attention all operative units: Operation Seed Heist is a go. Your mission, should you choose to accept it, is to steal as much seed as possible from the “squirrel-proof” bird feeder before being caught by the humans. This message will self-destruct in five seconds…

It’s that time of year in the garden! 🧄✨ If you planted hardneck garlic last fall, you’ve probably noticed those curly, tentacle-like stems popping up. Those are garlic scapes!

Cutting them off does two amazing things:
1️⃣ It forces the plant to redirect its energy away from making a flower and right back down into swelling those garlic cloves underground.
2️⃣ You get a bonus harvest!

Don’t throw them away—they have a wonderful, mild garlic flavor. Chop them up for a fresh stir-fry, turn them into a seasonal pesto, or freeze them for later.

Are your garlic scapes curling yet? What’s your favorite way to use them?

Stay tuned for a garlic scape pesto recipe coming soon!
