🐔🥚 THINKING ABOUT KEEPING CHICKENS FOR FRESH EGGS? 🥚🐔
You really don’t need a huge farm or tons of fancy equipment to keep a small backyard flock! If you’re thinking about starting with around 6 chickens, here are the basics you’ll need:
🏠 1. A Safe Chicken Coop
Your chickens need a dry, secure place to sleep and lay their eggs. Make sure it protects them from rain, wind, cold, and predators.
🏡 2. A Chicken Run
A fenced-in area gives them a safe place to scratch, dust bathe, explore, and get fresh air without wandering off.
🌾 3. Chicken Feed
Choose a good-quality layer feed once your hens are laying. Feed should provide the nutrients they need to stay healthy and produce eggs.
💧 4. Fresh Water
Clean, fresh water should always be available. Chickens can go through more water than you might expect, especially during hot weather!
🥚 5. Nesting Boxes
You don’t need a nesting box for every chicken. For about 6 hens, 2–3 nesting boxes is generally plenty.
🪵 6. Roosting Perches
Chickens naturally like to sleep up off the ground, so provide sturdy roosting bars inside the coop.
🧹 7. Bedding
Pine shavings or another appropriate chicken-safe bedding can help keep the coop clean and dry.
🦪 8. Oyster Shell
Laying hens need extra calcium to produce strong eggshells. Keep oyster shell available separately so hens can eat what they need.
🪨 9. Grit
If your chickens eat things besides commercial feed—especially grass, bugs, or other foods—they need access to appropriate grit to help grind their food.
🛡️ 10. Predator Protection
This is HUGE! Raccoons, foxes, hawks, coyotes, and other predators can be a serious threat. Secure fencing and a well-built coop are worth the investment.
❤️ And the most important thing…
Give them clean water, good food, a safe home, plenty of room to scratch and explore, and a little love!
🐔 Six happy hens can provide a wonderful supply of fresh eggs for a family—and chicken keeping can be surprisingly simple once you get the basics set up!
If you’re thinking about getting chickens, don’t let the idea of starting overwhelm you. Start small, learn as you go, and enjoy the experience! 🥚🐓❤️
