It's frost season! 🧊💦

We are checking bud development regularly to determine cold tolerance on the bogs. As the buds develop through the spring season, they become more and more sensitive to the cold temperatures. Running the irrigation on colder nights protects the buds from damage.

Cranberry was officially designated as one of the three colors of the Commonwealth of Massachusetts on February 21, 2005.

According to the Milford Daily News:
In the fall of 2000, Judith Marceau's third-grade class at the Elm Street School in Gardner began a civics project. They chose cranberry because of Massachusetts's ties to the cranberry industry. They picked blue for Cape Cod Bay that the Pilgrims sailed over. And they chose green to match the color of the Connecticut River Valley and the Berkshire mountains.

Marceau's students filed a bill with the help of state legislators Rep. Brian Knuuttila, D-Gardner, and Sen. Robert Antonioni, D-Leominster. Years later, Gov. Mitt Romney signed the bill into legislation.

Cranberry is also the official state berry, and cranberry juice is the state beverage.

Hello, honey bees 😊
Although we harvest honey in the late summer, we also leave a lot behind- 80-100 lbs per hive so the bees have plenty to eat all winter. Pictured here is a winter bee colony with a "pollen patty" we make for our bees consisting of cane sugar and a pollen substitute for carbs and protein. It's been a long cold winter and we want to make sure the bees have plenty of nutrition available in case they need it.

What do we do on the farm in January?

We watch the weather just as carefully in the winter as we do during the growing season. It's going to be intensely cold this week but the vines are protected under water and ice.

We also watch the sun set--what a view!

Winter flood is on!
Cranberry vines are cold hardy but the extended cold temperatures of wintertime and extreme cold events will damage the buds, so we flood the bogs with water to protect them.

Christmas is almost here!
The farm stand is open this weekend and stocked for the holiday with handmade items; boxwood arrangements, birch log centerpieces, simmer pot packets and pure beeswax candles and raw honey from our honey bees.
