🐝🚨 ROBBING SEASON IS HERE!
As the nectar flow slows down, honey bees start getting serious about protecting their food stores. This is when robbing can become a big problem.
Robbing happens when bees from one colony try to steal honey from another colony. You may notice bees fighting at the entrance, frantic flying around the hive, or bees trying to sneak through tiny cracks.
And this is where our GUARD BEES go to work! 🐝🛡️
Guard bees stand watch at the hive entrance, checking incoming bees by smell. They help recognize members of their own colony and challenge intruders. If a robber bee tries to get in, the guards can attack and drive it away.

🐝 The controversial beekeeping question… DO YOU FEED YOUR BEES? 🍯

Yes, we feed our bees! And there’s a good reason for it. Our bees need to build up enough stores to make it through winter. 🐝❄️

But here’s the important part: we do NOT feed during the honey flow. We don’t put honey supers on while feeding, which helps ensure sugar syrup doesn’t end up being stored as honey that we harvest.

We feed during those hot, dry summer periods when very little is blooming and the bees need a little help maintaining the colony and building their winter stores.

🐝💛 Teaching the Next Generation of Beekeepers! 💛🐝

One of our favorite things is sharing our love of honeybees with the next generation! All week we will have our observation hive and beekeeping equipment at Butterflies & Blooms in the Briar Patch for Putnam Primary first graders to learn all about the amazing life cycle of the honeybee. 🐝👑🥚🐛

The students are learning about life cycles in their unit this month, so what better way to bring their lessons to life than with REAL honeybees! 🔍🐝

From egg to larva, pupa, and finally an adult bee, the kids got to see firsthand how these incredible little pollinators grow and develop. We also talked about the different hive equipment beekeepers use and what makes a honeybee colony work together.

🐝🎉 We’re about to have a birthday party!

These little honeybees are busy chewing their way through the wax to be born! Each capped cell holds a developing bee, and when they’re ready, they chew through the wax cap and emerge as brand-new members of the hive. 🐝✨

But don’t let the smell fool you— honey bees LOVE it! Goldenrod provides an important late-season nectar source, and the honey it produces can be rich, bold, and absolutely delicious. 🍯🐝

🐝🔥 Are you hot? So are they!

When the temps start climbing, you may see the bees hanging out on the front of the hive like this. It’s called bearding—and it’s basically the bee version of standing outside because it’s too hot inside! 🐝☀️

👑 EIGHTEEN queen cells… on ONE frame! 🐝

That’s the bees’ way of saying, “We’re getting ready to swarm!”

When queen cells are charged (filled with royal jelly and a developing larva), the colony has already made the decision to raise new queens. Finding 18 on a single frame is a strong sign that this hive is preparing for a big change.

Beekeeping is a constant reminder that the hive always has a plan—and it’s our job to learn what they’re trying to tell us. Every inspection is another lesson. 🤓
