Reposted:

My name is Bee and I am Mvskoke, a Native American tribe located in Oklahoma. In honor of my ancestors, I am writing to you from my home in Annapolis, on stolen Susquehannock and Piscataway land.

We would like to take a moment to honor the legacy-past, present, and future-of the Native American people on this land. It is our responsibility to acknowledge the ongoing effects of settler colonialism, and to recognize that we benefit from the displacement, genocide, and past and present violence against Indigenous people on whose ancestral lands present-day United States, including the state of Maryland, stands.

We acknowledge the Accohannock Indian Tribe, Assateague Peoples Tribe, Nause-Waiwash Band of Indians, Piscataway Conoy Tribe, Piscataway Indian Nation, Pocomoke Indian Nation and Youghiogheny River Band of Shawnee Indians as the original stewards of Maryland's lands. See the historical boundaries, languages, and treaties of the tribes in Maryland here.

We acknowledge all Native American peoples in Maryland and on the wider Turtle Island, including those who are displaced and detribalized, who have had their identities and cultures stolen through the larger effects of colonialism and assimilation.

When we say we are working toward a more just and equitable future for Marylanders, that includes our Indigenous communities. There is so much work to be done—passing federal and state legislation for reparations; formally acknowledging Indigenous history and land rights; and, of course, ensuring that Native residents have affordable healthcare and housing, access to quality education, clean air and drinking water, and the many other basic human rights that everyone deserves. Progressive Maryland is committed to this work.

This month provides an opportunity to celebrate rich and diverse traditions, cultures, and histories and to acknowledge the unique contributions of Native people. Discover ways to appropriately reflect Native values in your life this month, such as finding new ways to be sustainable to the land and resources around you. In honor of my Mvskoke ancestors, I encourage you to not only take today to learn more about Native American history and cultures, but to do more in the fight for Native American people. We promise we will do the same.

Sincerely,
Bee Van Hall (they/them)
Social Media Coordinator for Progressive Maryland

Senator Corey Booker's timely comments about the Food and Nutrition Crisis we face in America and the need to rethink food policy and production strategies.
We at ECO City Farms agree and want to work with the Administration on a Healthy and Affordable Food for All approach to feeding our nation's people and producing and subsidizing healthy food.

Our Story

Engaged Community Offshoots, Inc. (ECO City Farms) is a nonprofit urban teaching and learning farm in Prince George's County that grows great food, farms and farmers in ways that protect, restore and sustain the natural environment and the health of local communities. Working with area children, youth and adults, ECO educates and trains the next generation of urban farmers, eaters and environmental activists.

Urban agriculture is about feeding people and nurturing communities, and also about practicing climate-smart agriculture. Our work intersects environmental preservation, neighborhood revitalization and community health. Our two “Certified Naturally Grown” farms are infrastructural fixes for the many community ills created by an inequitable local food system and environmental injustice. We seek to reverse the impact of outdated policies that make industrially produced, environmentally destructive, highly processed and less nutritious food the most abundant and cheapest available option in Prince George’s County’s low-income neighborhoods. ECO's educational programs retool residents with knowledge, gathering spaces and skills aimed at creating a healthier, more local, equitable and greener environment and economy.

Students at the University of Maryland are conducting a survey regarding food insecurity in Riverdale Park. This survey seeks to identify if food or nutrition-related issues are prevalent in Riverdale Park. This survey takes approximately five to ten minutes and consists of questions regarding food security issues. Please distribute amongst family members and friends.

Background: We are Environmental Science and Policy students at the University of Maryland enrolled in Senior Capstone this semester. For this course, teams of students are tasked with addressing environmental concerns in surrounding communities of College Park. Our team is responsible for determining the extent of food insecurity in Riverdale Park, which is a small municipality south of campus. Upon completion of our assessment of food insecurity, we will be providing recommendations for addressing these concerns to Riverdale Park's Mayor, Alan Thompson.
