E.G.A. Farms...our story

We are a small family farm. Both my husband and I are veterans. We raise chickens for meat and eggs as well as pigs. We are not “certified” organic, but we follow organic principles and try to do everything as natural as we can. We have a ‘full-circle’ approach to life- We hate to see anything go to waste. We try to use everything we have and be good stewards of what the Good Lord has blessed us with.

We work with local brewers ( Black Label Brewing Company & Lumber Beard), distillers (Warrior Liquor) and wine makers (Cellar Bluff) and use the grains and grapes after they have been distilled or fermented and feed them back to animals or use them for compost. Chickens and pigs love it!-- We raise grain, and sell it to brewers--- brewers make beer with it then give it back to us to feed our animals--- we drink the beer and everyone eats the pigs, chickens and eggs--- full circle.

The eggs are an especially interesting story-- Elizabeth (our daughter) started her egg business at the age of 9, (2013). I feel pretty confident in saying she is really an expert when it comes to raising and butchering chickens. She has been an intricate part of the farm from day -1. She home-schools and is active in church youth group.- no she does not do 4-H or F.F.A. She does do farm tours in the summer, periodically speaks to groups about being a young farmer, raising & butchering chickens and other farm related topics.

I (Cheryl) have been active duty military since we started our farm, I am looking forward to retiring from active duty and going full time on the farm. I help out with the animals and generally take leave to butcher chickens in the summer. I attempt at gardening, which I love, but am by no means an expert. I have spoken along with my daughter on panels regarding chicken farming and being women farmers. I do the majority of the “inside” stuff, such as canning, freezing, dehydrating, cooking, and paperwork--- you would be surprised how much paperwork there is in farming.
