So..it’s been awhile since I took pictures in the gardens. The heat has been relentless . The sun has done a lot of damage, but this week I’ve watered carefully.
To my great surprise, the watermelon and pumpkin vines have taken over and run amuck!!
There are only a few vines in number, but they have embraced the heat and overrun their assigned space.
Turmeric , ginger and horseradish are giving those vines a run in comparison, for beauty.
It’s early evening, the sun is going down. A soft, southern breeze is gently moving the branches of lemon verbena and from here , I can smell the sweet cardamom flowers.
I love my life. I am blessed.

Report from sunflower herb farm:
Temperature was 92 degrees as I finished up in the rows.
Basils are doing well, tulsi everywhere, genovese producing mightily!
New pumpkin and watermelon vines have tripled in length and size, lemon verbena, motherwort and horehound -green and thriving. The turmeric, horseradish and ginger are not near completion, but no signs of trouble. Echinacea and white sage are blooming along with the passion flower. Since I harvested lemon grass it has grown back nicely. Lemon balm hates the heat and is struggling a bit. Yerba mate , bay and Hawthorne doing well. Spearmint, peppermint and chocolate mint are well. Comfrey is suffering in the heat , but I watered it deeply this morning.
Sad news, I only had 2 hibiscus sab that matured and one has keeled over. I put it back up and supported it, but it appears to be dead.
Broom corn is tasseling for the second time, I’ll harvest a bit in a couple of weeks.
Hot , hot, hot today. It’s now noon and I’m in for the day!
Time for water and cold bath!!

I think… this is my last year growing herbs for the public, and making products. It is with a sad heart that I make this decision.
The internet has become the leading authority on herbalism and training. It is not a good learning tool . It is a guide, but not always accurate. Self proclaimed “teachers” are promising you , (like pop up truck driving schools) that you can be a “certified”herbalist in 2 weeks!!”
Did I waste ten years of study when I could have done it in 2 weeks? Did I throw good funds away to a reputable school and teachers?
It’s becoming a joke.
I’m very disappointed in the attitude of new would-be herb novices. If you even mention that they should get even a little formal training, they get all psycho on you and blow flames in your direction.
I don’t want to be a part of this new herbal ai trend. This has been weighing very heavy on my mind for the last year. It makes me sad that a new generation of herb “students” (and I use that term loosely) believe they are infallible and also have no regard for the green preservation for this earth. (Irresponsible foraging)
I will grow my little tea garden for myself and keep expanding my broom corn patch.
