Steamboat Springs school counselor Anna Allsberry says she couldn’t afford to live in her hometown without billionaire Mark Stevens. With median rents at $3,500 and home prices at $1.42 million, “Definitely not, no,” she says when asked if her salary could cover housing.

Relief came after Stevens bought Riverview Apartments and cut rents for local workers. Allsberry and her boyfriend landed a two-bedroom for $2,050 a month. “The prices seemed too good to be true,” she says. After a competitive process, they were approved. “We were just so excited, relieved, and grateful. It didn’t feel real.”
