Springtime requires all hands on deck ~ and we always have the absolute best crew of friends and family to pitch in and get the work done! Springs calves have all been worked and last year’s calf crop has been shipped off of wheat pasture. We are praising God for rain and green pastures. It’s hard, fun work and we are so blessed to do it! 💚🥩🌾🌦️🙌

It was a busy spring caring for and getting the 2023 calf crop off the ranch as feeders. All while welcoming the 2024 calf crop & getting them worked. Thankful for great help and the opportunities to help others. Wheat harvest is done and gone as well. A hot & dry June had us really counting our blessings as a very timely rain came in early July. Praying for more!

Rewind a little over two months to early May - Our hay lots were almost empty; the ponds were dry; a few of our grass pastures were bare in places; and we were continuing to pray for rain and for wisdom for spring planting decisions. God is the giver of all good things. We have said it over and over - it’s impossible to farm without faith and we are blessed to do it!

Some years require more faith than others. Ideally, our wheat fields would be green by now and we’d be weaning calves for winter wheat grazing. This year we have yet to plant a single seed and we are weaning calves and evaluating every possible option to keep from selling them early. We’re praying for wisdom {and rain!} And trusting that in every season He is working for our good and His glory. 🙏🌧🌾🥩

That’s a wrap on our 2022 wheat harvest. Our long range plan is to grow wheat to feed our calves each year. But, some years market and weather changes require us to be flexible. This year, we are incredibly thankful for seed genetic research and wheat varieties that performed relatively well despite very challenging growing conditions. J-R Cattle Company is putting a lot of bread on tables along with our beef this year - and we are blessed to do it!
