That funny face actually has a purpose! When a yak curls its upper lip, it’s performing what’s called the Flehmen response, or “flehmen.” By curling their upper lip, they draw scents toward a special scent organ in their mouth, helping them gather information about other animals—especially during breeding season. So when you see a yak making this face, they aren’t smiling—they’re actually just trying to get a better read on what’s going on around them!
