Spent Saturday in Greenville being part of the NC Beekeepers Born and Bred teaching team. We presented a day long clinic on queen rearing with hands on demonstrations of grafting, mating NUCs, caging and marking queens as well as establishing and maintaining a cell builder. Full house of students and a great teaching team to be part of.

SOLD OUT I have some melter honey or baking honey available. As mentioned before, this is a dark colored honey that comes from heating wax cappings. The honey and the wax separate in the process (there is no wax in this honey). This honey is no longer raw and has a caramelized taste. It is often used for baking (cookies, breads, granola bars), making BBQ sauces or making mead.

5lb tubs for $15 / 12lb gallon pail for $25 or 60lb bucket for $100. Limited supply.

NUCs are made up, cells went in and some queens have started to lay. Some of these should be ready for customers who pre-ordered next weekend. More to come in the next couple weeks. I still have some deep frame nucs available in the early part of May if someone is looking for bees.

These pictures were taken a couple months ago during the peak of swarm season.

There is a lot of literature about hanging swarm traps 10-15 feet in a tree off the ground. For the past couple of years, I experimented by placing all my swarm traps without the use of a ladder. Depending on terrain, they were all generally between 4-8 feet off the ground.

The first picture is trap located on an abandoned forklift, about chest high. The second picture is a deep hive body with frames of drawn comb on the back of my truck. I have also had swarms occupy empty old honey supers stacked on a pallet.

I have found that a properly baited trap which offers the ideal cavity size will attract the scout bees and be just as effective regardless of height.

After the honey harvest comes the processing of wax. That means that I have some more melter honey available (it was a hit last year). This honey has been heated and is no longer raw. This is not the preferred honey for a biscuit. Melter honey is often used for baking, making mead or making BBQ sauce, etc. It has a slight caramelized. $25 per gallon.
