You may remember that, about a month ago, we got 32 chicks (well, 2 are turkeys, but who's counting) to grow out for a farm we are providing consulting services for.

They are getting big! They are not quite ready to move to their forever farm, but they were too big for the brooder we started them in, so we built them a new temporary home with much more space. But they still prefer to snuggle close together more often than not.

People often ask us how quickly they might see fruit from our trees. We always say that elderberry trees can produce fruit as early as the year after you transplant them.

These are flowers forming on two of our elderberry bushes that we planted last spring, and most of our other elderberry trees we planted last year have similar clusters.

Obviously these flowers will need to be pollinated and we'll have to get to the ripe berries before the birds, but assuming all goes well, we will see a small harvest from each of our trees late this summer/early fall.

When we first started homesteading and were learning how to garden, we bought all kinds of tools that other homesteaders online convinced us would miraculously make gardening super easy.

While these tools definitely have their place, we were using them with the wrong applications, and they ended up making things harder.

Last year, when our other tools were on the other side of the garden, I picked up our old garden hoe that I had always avoided and decided to give it a try. I was amazed at how it took out patches of weeds with ease!

There's a reason that garden hoes have been around for thousands of years! Our ancestors had it right. Sometimes it's best to just stick with the old ways.

NOTICE CHANGE OF VENUE: This coming Saturday, June 13, the Elkhart Farmers Market will be held at Lundquist-Bicentennial Park, as part of the Rhapsody Art and Music Festival. We are bringing some extra goodies this week, and we will be there from 9am until we sell out, or as late as 8pm.

The event is free to the public, and there are several lots that are offering free parking, and there will also be streetside parking.

So come out and get some goodies and listen to some music! It'll be a great time!

Did you know that pepper plants like to hold hands?

It's just a cute way of saying that you should plant your pepper plants close enough that their leaves touch once they are full grown. This creates a canopy that protects the delicate peppers as they are growing, so they don't get sunburned. Yes, peppers can get sunburned and it makes them very undesirable.

It also has the added benefit of protecting the plants, which often grow tall and skinny, from being damaged by the wind.

Lastly, it makes it easier for people , like us, to plant a lot of pepper plants into a small space.

We give our peppers about 18" to grow. We plant them in 2 rows, approximately 18" apart, with each plant about 18" from the next. Then we give a couple feet for a walkway and start all over. I think we're planting about 150 pepper plants this year, ranging from sweet peppers to ultra spicy peppers.
