We have new residents at Honeybear Hills Homestead! 🦆💛
Meet our nine newest family members... Khaki Campbell and Blue Swedish ducklings!
We've spent the last few days turning part of our old chicken coop into a duck nursery with shade, a splash pool, and plenty of room to explore. They're settling in, discovering every puddle they can find, and already stealing our hearts.
And, of course, Arty Cat has volunteered to supervise the entire operation from her hammock above the duck yard. 🐈😂
We're excited to watch these little fluff balls grow and can't wait to share the adventure with y'all.

🌿 We've been keeping a secret...
Two months. Countless hours. More pallets than we care to admit. 😅
Every weekend has been spent building something we've dreamed about for a long time.
It's finally starting to look like... well... something.
We're not quite ready to tell you what it is just yet, but trust us... it's going to be worth the wait because something is growing at Honeybear Hills...
It's not in the garden.
It's not in the greenhouse.
But it's being built with the same love, hard work, and a whole lot of determination. We've been pouring our hearts into a project behind the scenes, one board at a time.
It's still got a long way to go, but today felt like one of those milestones worth celebrating.
We can't wait to show you what's coming.

🌿 My Favorite Spot on the Homestead 🌿
If you come looking for me, there's a good chance you'll find me right here in the greenhouse.
Today was one of those peaceful garden days. I was thinning carrots, checking on the pond, admiring the strawberries, and just enjoying my favorite little corner of Honey Bear Hills Homestead.
Then I spotted something strange...
One of my carrots is already trying to flower! 🥕🌼
That's usually something second-year carrots do after they've gone through a winter and decide it's time to make seed. These were planted this year, so apparently this one didn't get the memo. Nature likes to keep us guessing.
I'll probably let it keep growing just to see what happens and maybe collect some seeds if it decides to follow through with its rebellious plans.
The greenhouse is constantly teaching me something new. Every day there's a surprise waiting behind a leaf, under a flower, or popping up where it shouldn't.

🍄✨ First Chanterelles of the Season! ✨🍄
The woods have officially started sharing their treasures! 🌿🤎
Today we found our first chanterelles of the season here at Honeybear Hills Homestead. There's something special about spotting that golden glow peeking through the forest floor after a good rain. Like little nuggets of sunshine hidden among the leaves. ☀️🍄
One of the things we love most about foraging is that it slows you down. You start noticing the tiny details, the smells of the woods, the songs of the birds, and all the gifts nature provides when you're paying attention.
⚠️ As always, never eat any wild mushroom unless you are 100% certain of its identification. Many mushrooms have dangerous look-alikes, and proper identification is essential.
These beauties will be headed to the kitchen tonight, and around here that's about as fresh and local as food gets!

Y'all know I have a hard time driving past a roadside farm stand without stopping. 🚜🌻
One of my favorite things about living in North Georgia is discovering all the local farms, homesteads, and small businesses tucked along our back roads.
Today's find was these homemade oatmeal cream pies, and let me tell you... they barely survived long enough to make it back to the house. 😅
I enjoyed mine while walking through the garden, admiring the cabbages and checking on everything growing here at Honeybear Hills Homestead. Fresh air, sunshine, growing food, and a homemade treat from a local farm stand... that's about as good as it gets.
If you're out exploring the area, be sure to stop in and support your local farmers, bakers, homesteaders, and makers. Every purchase helps keep these small family operations going, and that's something worth supporting. ❤️ So here's a little shout-out and thank you to our fellow local farm stand owners for the delicious treat. ❤️

Today's homestead lesson: Not every bug in the garden is a bad bug.
A few days ago I noticed some of our cabbages were getting chewed up while others were untouched. After some investigating, I found this little garden helper tucked away in the leaves.
At Honey Bear Hills, we don't use chemical pesticides in our garden. Instead, we try to work with nature whenever possible. That means learning which bugs are helping us and which ones are causing trouble.
We're even hatching praying mantises this year and getting ready to release ladybugs into the garden. Between the mantises, ladybugs, spiders, birds, and other beneficial insects, nature provides a pretty impressive pest control team.
Growing food isn't just about planting seeds. It's about paying attention, asking questions, making mistakes, and understanding the tiny ecosystem that's working around us every day.
These cabbages may not be perfect, but they're teaching us something new with every leaf.

🌿🐻 Life Around Honeybear Hills Homestead 🐻🌿
One of the things we love most about homestead life is that every day brings something new.
This week we've been watching a mama deer guide her brand-new fawn through the property, checking on tiny birds tucked safely into their nest, and enjoying the first signs of the summer garden coming to life. The tomatoes are setting fruit, peppers are growing, and the garden is finally starting to show the rewards of all those long days of planting, mulching, watering, and waiting.
Of course, it wouldn't be Honeybear Hills without chickens. Our newest little flock members are growing fast and keeping us entertained every step of the way. 🐥
It's easy to get caught up in the work, but moments like these remind us why we do it. The garden, the animals, the wildlife, and the changing seasons all come together to make this place feel like home.
