I’ve been feeling defeated lately. All I want is to be in the pen with this girl here and we don’t seem to be getting any closer. When she was born I had a big goal of competing at the NRHA Futurity with her. As time went on futurities just weren’t in the cards. I gave myself an “out” letting her have another year to grow as she was on the small side, but here we are halfway through her 3 year old year and I have barely been able to put any time in her. Between wedding planning, buying the trail riding business and getting that going, working on buying a house as well along with the other bookkeeping for the 2 other businesses we run I’ve managed to squeeze in maybe 20 rides this year. She’s getting older and I’m losing hope about getting her able to show. I struggle with the decision to send her out for training because I really wanted this to be something I did with her. But if just finding the time to ride is a struggle trying to get away for lessons once or twice a month is just about impossible. Every day when I do chores I give her her scratches and tell her someday but lately it’s feeling more and more of a stretch. I just feel defeated.

Lexy had her first trip out with the big girls! We did the Enosburg loop around, 7.5 miles. She acted like this was something she does on the regular and handled dogs, traffic, and the city with ease.

It has been such a rainy and wet spring and has really delayed training. I’m needing a few day stretch of nice weather to dry my arena to begin Lexy’s training again. This year she’s going to be in training all summer long and I’m so excited to see what we accomplish. Our first event is a clinic in NY with Downunder horsemanship clinician Jeff Davis!! We won’t have much under saddle time leading up to it but our ground work is solid and we’ve been conditioning with ponying her on trail rides for exposure. Pray to the sun god for me cause this girl is gonna shine ☀️

Tipsy has made it to 100 rides! Her first ride was March 28 so it took us just over 13 months but I think that slow and steady with young horses is best. She doesn’t turn 3 until June 27! Here are some stats about these first 100 rides.
-23 were out of the arena on the trail
-16 were away from home
-1 two day clinic
-1 three day camping trip
-2 horse competitions
-1 lesson
I’m so proud of this horse and her mind and personality. She may be considered “behind” by the reining world but we are starting to buckle down and start to work on our maneuvers now. I feel she will gain ground quickly and I have a horse who is better off mentally and has had some time to mature physically as well.

Lexy has been under saddle for a week now and is half way through the fundamental riding exercises. We are getting some cold rainy/snowy weather the next couple days so she’s getting a much deserved break. I don’t plan to push her, just take it slow and steady. However she’s so much fun keeping me off her isn’t going to be easy 🙃

Today we were able to work in the round pen to work on getting some more loping done. You can tell she’s not too comfortable when she gets off the sand track. There are moments when she’s relaxed that you can see her natural self carriage and I love it 🥰. I am beginning to get a little more respect for my leg as the gas pedal and we asked for more steps in yielding the hindquarters as well as doing more loping. I’d say that’s 1% better🙂
