Is this a new variety of scorpion dragon fruit? Zucchini? Or AI?
It's none of those. It's just a regular American Beauty Fortule dragon fruit that started out as branch then changed into a flower, then subsequently fruited.
Dragon fruit nodes contain an axillary meristem, a group of cells capable of developing into either a vegetative branch or a flower. The node’s fate is not always predetermined from the beginning; it can remain developmentally flexible for a period of time.
A node may initially begin as a small vegetative shoot, but later switch to reproductive development if the plant receives the appropriate combination of environmental and physiological signals. What appears to be a “branch changing into a flower” may therefore be a developmental transition rather than a fully formed branch literally transforming into a flower.
The decision is influenced by several factors:
Shoot maturity: Mature stems are much more capable of flowering than young, actively growing shoots.
Carbohydrate status: Strong light and adequate photosynthesis provide the energy needed for reproductive development.
Temperature: Seasonal temperature changes strongly influence flowering.
Water availability: Adequate water supports growth, while excessive vegetative growth or certain stress conditions can alter the balance.
Nutrition: Nitrogen tends to promote vegetative growth, while overall nutrient balance affects reproductive development.
Hormones: Auxin, cytokinins, gibberellins, ABA, and flowering signals such as FT-like proteins interact to influence whether a meristem remains vegetative or becomes reproductive.
Plant age and genetics: Different dragon fruit varieties have different tendencies toward branching and flowering.
So the process can be simplified as:
Axillary meristem → early vegetative development → environmental/hormonal signals change → floral initiation → flower bud
This developmental flexibility explains why a node that initially looks like a branch can later develop into a flower.
