Larue the crested caracara with the classic caracara call. He went for some huge flights over the ridgeline and showed back up over the opposite one in a matter of seconds, it seemed. It has taken many ups and downs with him to feel consistent in his big flights, and he can be a challenging bird. But one of our proudest goals is a nice full crop and an eagerness to go home voluntarily.... and tell everyone all about it ;)

Bird loafs. Also known as bird boats ❤️

“Loafing” is the scientific term for when a bird is displaying relaxed behaviors not specifically related to feeding, breeding, or predator evasion. As you can see, New Guy really knows how to loaf. We’re hoping for some uneventful weeks full loafing ahead as Annie and the New Guy work on tending the eggs before they hatch.

Training naked :) We have put together a fun little project with our new Harris's Hawk. We are using the constructional approach that we have used previously with the ornate hawk eagle training without any equipment and progressive diet management. We use careful attention to the slightest avoidance responses. Here he is showing curiosity and interest to our approach without any food present! We had a lively conversation during our Live Q&A in the Avian Behavior Lab today talking about this guy as well as how these concepts could be helpful for our members. We are eager to see not just how this fellow progresses but how other trainers put these ideas to good use as well!

A few of our birds have been exhibiting some signs of increased excitement lately, and it's safe to say there are a lot of things happening at ABI these days! But how do you know if it's "hormonal" behavior or not, and how can you deal with situations where your parrot clearly wants to create an inappropriate pair bond? Well, lucky you, we have a free webinar you can sink your teeth into and see what small changes you can make that have a big impact! 43 How Murphy's Law Can Improve Your Animal Training - Avian Behavior International

Learning about likely origins of Murphy's Law allowed us the time to reflect on the practices and ways we design our training paradigm to help us set ourselves and our animals up to succeed. Understanding mindset can lead you further down your path to mastery. Let us know what you think about the latest episode of the Avian Behavior Podcast! What do trials for human's capacity for G force have to do with animal training? Turns out, the alleged beginnings of Murphy's law at Edwards Air Force Base in California by Colonel Stapp's team had its beginnings not in pessimism but practicality. Our episode explores how we can use this mindset ca...

Our Animal Training and Behavior 2022 workshop just wrapped, and what an amazing week of animal behavior inspo it has been. Even with the wild winter weather and all of the ABI staff working to keep the birds safe and the guests taken care of, we managed to have some absolutely incredible learning experiences. I cannot possibly pick my favorite training sessions, each day brought such creativity from each person. So I thought I would share what I managed to capture, or even be part of. Nevermind my incredibly enthusiastic, self-involved and perhaps distracting bridging in this video. I was really excited to watch our guest Sally come up with this behavior. She wanted to teach a beak rest for many possibilities in the future (beak trimming? eye drops? open mouth behaviors? The sky is the limit). I edited this five minutes session (FIVE MINUTES YALL! LOOK WHAT CAN BE ACCOMPLISHED) where we changed the target behavior to be a cue for something totally different. This was a special one to be a part of. Go Sally and Leo!

Whoa! It's not easy being a bird :( Lucky this one has treatment and a chance.

Spring and summer internship opportunity!

This is Rhiannon, one of our interns in the fall of 2021, with Ramsey our sacred ibis! Rhiannon was looking for more hands on experience working with and training animals. She got to work with our wide variety of animals from birds of prey to chickens and everything in between. Her favorite bird to work with was our cockatoos and dipping her toes into falconry. Our internships involve hands on learning experiences with positive reinforcement training, developing a lexicon of animal body language, animal care, creative and interactive enrichment design, conservation and education and so much more. Our internship opportunities for the spring session is now open and you can check out more information at our website:

The deadline for applications is February 13th 2022.

Three Tips to Stop Parrot Biting

We put together this video of Carmen the African Grey parrot from Parrot Education and Adoption Center 's foster program. He is a wonderful boy and so sweet. He does a great job of helping us talk about how we can reduce biting in parrots. Non-coercive negative reinforcment training makes an appearance here! Our motto when it comes to looking at good behaviors and ones we want to see less of is that the more we do something, the more we do something!

How do you stop your parrot, parakeet, or cockatiel from biting, even if you aren't even trying to step it up? We discuss three often overlooked simple ways ...

Starting out 2022 with our podcast on animal training mentorships and role models! At the top of the episode, we talk about the idea that human beings were not designed to do big things alone, we are designed to do big things together. Collaboration can feel really difficult sometimes, but feedback is an incredibly helpful tool for growth. Let's dig in!

Owls are skilled hunters using their amazing senses to locate and pounce on prey like mice. The barn owl for example has a heart-shaped facial disc that funnels sound to the ears and allows the bird to find prey just by listening.

One way you can help owls in the wild is by choosing not to use rodent poison! Rodenticides make mice slow and easy targets for anything that might eat them, including owls. If an owl ingests a poisoned mouse, it will also be lethal for the bird. By choosing other rodent control methods, you can help save owls in their natural habitats!

Pictured is our beautiful barn owl Beatrix.
