Out in the field with Brandon, talking cover crops, soil health, and our plans for spring. 🌱 We’re using tarps to terminate cover crops and prepare planting areas while reducing tillage.

This site will serve as a demonstration site for the BEACON Farmers-Guiding-Farmers project with the South Carolina Black Farmers Coalition, sharing hands-on organic growing practices and learning together.

🌱 FARMERS & RANCHERS — THIS OPPORTUNITY IS FOR YOU!

The SC Black Farmers Coalition, in partnership with the SC Black Farmers Coalition Foundation and FAMU, is recruiting farmers and ranchers for the BEACON Farmers-Guiding-Farmers Project.

BEACON connects producers through farmer-to-farmer learning, hands-on demonstrations, technical assistance, conservation planning, and agroecology/organic farming practices designed to strengthen our farms and communities.

🌾 Practices include cover crops, composting, crop rotation, raised beds, pollinator habitat, soil-health practices and more.

📍 Recruiting across South Carolina, North Carolina & South Georgia

Bossville Farms is featuring one of our farming partners, Old Bluff Farms in Hopkins, South Carolina! 🌱

They had a successful h**p grow this year, and now it’s harvest time. Check out the skid steer and sickle blade in action as they bring in the crop.

Building better soil at Bossville Farms! 🌱🚜

On September 21, we planted 75 pounds of SCSU 1890 cover crop mix from Mixon Seed Service—oats, Austrian winter peas, Siberian kale, and purple top turnips. We also used True Earth Barnyard fertilizer as part of our soil-building work.

We put the BCS walk-behind tractor to work, with the tiller and depth roller handling our field conditions best. The seeder attachment had trouble with the different seed sizes, so we adjusted as we went.

All the seed is down, and about half the field was incorporated before a downpour stopped us. We’ll finish the remaining work as conditions allow.

Thank you to 1890 Research & Extension program for the cover crop seed. We’re continuing to invest in our soil and the future of this farm! 🌾

The h**p harvest is complete at Bossville Farms! 🌱

In this field update, I’m showing where our industrial h**p grew, along with the cowpeas we planted as a cover crop and the sweet potatoes that will soon be ready for harvest.

We’ve tarped several areas to terminate the remaining cover crop. Next, we’ll flail-mow the former h**p field and plant a new cover crop provided by South Carolina State University. This will help us continue building organic matter, protecting the soil, and supporting healthy growing conditions for future crops.

At Bossville Farms, every harvest prepares the ground for what comes next.
