Restoring 1900s farming traditions in the rugged foothills of the Rocky Mountains.
Nestled in the foothills in Evergreen Colorado our small farm is home to pasture raised Iowa Swabian Hall/Mulefoot Pigs, gourmet grass fed Icelandic Lamb, Alpine and Lamancha Goats, as well as free range chicken, turkey, and eggs.
CAFOs. feedlots, confinement operations, e-coli, listeria, GMOs, food allergies, food recalls, organics, free-range, grass-fed...
This is the language of modern-day agriculture: words that meant almost nothing to us when we started raising our own animals, words that can still be used to mean a number of things. It's so confusing! How does one make any sense of it all?
We strive to provide our family, friends and community with healthy food harvested from animals that have lived there lives the way they were intended to live; on grass, in fresh air and lots of Colorado sunshine.
Our food system is broken. Controlled by mega-corporations and kept alive by tax dollars, it no longer resembles the quaint farming scenes featured on the packaging of its products. Instead, it's a system of mono-cropping kept alive by petrochemicals working in tandem with a factory system that, by its very nature, abuses the human and animal lives it depends upon.
Now that we know this, we feel a calling to do something about it. Our mission is simple: To provide ethically raised foods and to promote good health in our community. Our animals are raised outside on grass and in the sunshine, free to do what they are designed to do. In turn, their behaviors nurture the soil. Healthy soil leads to healthy plant life, which leads to healthy animals and healthy people. We don't need fertilizers, and we don't use unnecessary antibiotics, or medications.
Like most people, we are limited in our resources. As the saying goes, "We are too poor to be cheap." We try to spend our money wisely, so when we buy food, we focus on quality over quantity. Nutrient-dense meats make sense for our personal economy. When we eat pasture-raised meats from 8000 Eggs Farm, we know we are consuming meats that won't just fill our bellies, but will really nurture our bodies. We get pleasure in knowing that these finely crafted meats taste "like meat used to taste".
Our Heritage pigs are fed a pasture based diet as well locally sourced NON-GMO mixed grain. I use intensive rotational grazing practices in the summer and source local alfalfa and mountain grass in the winter so that the animals always have their salad bar.
Our Icelandic Sheep are pastured in the summer and fed local mountain grass in the winter.
Our Alpine and Lamancha goats are prolific producers of milk. We offer seasonal raw milk herd shares, as well as cheese, cream, butter, and meat from our goat herd. All of the extra milk is used to promote the growth of our pigs, and baby poultry.
We also offer free range eggs. They can be picked up at the farm, or from the road side stand when available.
