On our farm we produce milk and eggs. That is what pays our bills. We charge accordingly for what it cost to produce those products.
Milk is sold in bulk with some raw milk sales.
Eggs are sold in our stand and in some stores. We give bulk discount but do not sell wholesale.
Now with our beef and chickens we sell them at cost. Why because they already paid for themselves with the other products. So this is a byproduct.
I have my chickens processed so I have that expense and then the electricity to freeze and store them. So I do not sell them by the pound.
Beef, again they paid for themselves when giving milk. So we charge by the package of what it cost to butcher them. Not what it cost to raise them.
When buying chickens, beef, pork and other meats that are raised for that purpose you have to pay that price to the farmer. If we raise meat birds solely for that purpose we would have to charge accordingly to make a living off doing that. That is why you are paying a premium for that meat. So when you see prices like mine in the stand know it’s not that I’m under cutting the market or trying to steal customers it’s just my beef and chickens arent the same product.
Talk to your farmers and know what you are buying and why!
It cost money to raise food and raise it right.
Farmers deserve to be paid fairly for the food they produce.
