I realized a few weeks ago that some of the girls are getting pretty fat.
Well I guess some fenceline breeding happened in May/June.
Dearly hoping they're Ramberts offspring. 🙏 Fall milking wasn't what I was planning but here we are.

The bees have not had a good year. I finally was able to go out and work the hives Monday. Its just been a month.
One split that hasn't done well had a dead out to wax moths. The other hives are doing well and recovering from the heat. No honey to harvest this year. I left one super on to see if they will finish filling it.
Then I was feeding the sheep this morning and saw these ladies in the swarm trap. I guess they know where I live now.

It feels like a hard year. But honestly homesteading is difficult every year.
I lost my dairy breeding ram, Rambert. He fought hard for 2 weeks and 1 day. I spent multiple hours a day working with him.
Just feeling so heartbroken.

Straining the juice for grape jelly and marveling over the color! Its so vibrant. I might dye the whole towel on purpose...

Found the queen about 8pm. I love doing this but sometimes I have to talk myself through the middle part when I feel overwhelmed and it seems like a big mess.

My youngest spotted these bees in a tree at Abraham Lincoln's birthplace state park.
