Remember this word when buying Extra Virgin Olive Oil: Polyphenols

Quite often when consumers go looking for "olive oil", their primary focus is "how does it taste?" While we certainly want our food to "taste" good, I can not emphasize enough the importance of what's "inside" your olive oil that matters as much as the "taste". The truly magic ingredients inside your olive oil are called Polyphenols. These magic ingredients are know to help prevent blood clots, reduce blood sugar levels, and lower heart disease risk. They may also promote brain function, improve digestion, and offer some protection against cancer.

How this relates to YOUR olive oil is the following. Extra Virgin Olive Oil (not olive oil) has much, much higher levels of polyphenols. Furthermore, the longer your even Extra Virgin Olive Oil sits after harvest and is potentially exposed to light and air, the lower and lower amount of polyphenols remain.

As I recently reported, many of the "olive oils" you find in your grocery store have been on the shelves for over a year and are completely devoid of any health benefits and certainly very little or no polyphenols remain.

All of this and so much more are reasons to know your extra virgin olive oil supplier, ask for their polyphenol analysis if available, and certain know how long it has been since their olives were harvested and pressed.

Back from our local Albertson's grocery store this morning and of course had to stop by the olive oil section. This is what I found today: I looked at the front of this very impressive looking Colativa, Mediterranean, First Cold Pressed, Extra Virgin Olive Oil!!!

When I turned the bottle around I found: BBD: 11/2021!!!! I asked the store manager what BBD means and he said "Best Buy Date" (and of course apologized).

So what this means is at least 2 things: 1st - the olive oil is past it's buy/expiration date and; 2nd - since olive oil is never kept more that 2 years (we recommend 1.5 years for ours), this olive oil is at least 2 years old, probably sitting on the store shelves under destructive florescent lights most of this time!!!!

Once again my friends, Know your supplier and always thoroughly check the label!!!

So many times when I am at our local grocery store I see shoppers staring at all the olive oil selections. I often take a few minutes to suggest the following: (1) never buy one of these bottles that may have been sitting for months and months under the store's damaging florescent lights; (2) if you are going to buy one, make sure it has a harvest date printed on the bottles and make sure the date is within the last year; (3) only buy olive oil in dark bottles that is protected at least a little from the harmful store's florescent lights; (4) and check the label to make sure it actually says 100% extra virgin olive oil (in the USA you can call it extra virgin olive oil if it only contains 10% evoo. Of course, at the end I pull out one of our business cards and say, "if you truly want 100% pure fresh extra virgin olive oil, start here" www.ildivinooliveoil.com/shop

IL DIVINO's 2021 harvest Extra Virgin Olive Oil is derived from olives harvested on October 28, 2021 in the Valtiberina region of Tuscany and pressed the following day. A late freeze in April 2021 resulted in many olive blossoms being lost and limiting the total volume of olive oil that could be produced. However, the olive tree blossoms that survived resulted in excellent olive oil due to the long hot 2021 summer in Tuscany. We love it and we hope you do too. www.ildivinooliveoil.com/shop

In Italy, where people know their olive oil, there’s an age-old saying: “Vino vecchio, olio nuovo.” It reveals an important secret about how to buy olive oil...

This saying means that you want your wine to be old, but your olive oil to be new, as in fresh from the harvest. This is why towns and villages throughout Italy throw harvest parties each year to celebrate the arrival of their prized fresh-pressed olive oil.

Savvy olive oil lovers in Italy and the world over know that the olive is a fruit. And olive oil is a fruit juice. Just as with other fruit juices, olive oil is at its zenith of flavor and nutritional potency when fresh-squeezed. If you’ve never tasted harvest-fresh olive oil, your first experience will be one of the great culinary epiphanies of your life.

The big problem for us here in America is that it’s virtually impossible to find authentic fresh-pressed extra virgin olive oil in stores. That’s because most olive oil is shipped to the US on slow-moving cargo ships. Then it languishes in warehouses and on store shelves for many months, sometimes years. As a result, olive oils in stores are often technically within their "best if used by" date but months or years beyond their window of peak freshness, flavor and nutritional potency.

Here at IL DIVINO these problems are all eliminated. Following our early harvest in late October our olives are pressed within 24 hours. We then transport the fresh extra virgin olive oil direct to the USA on commercial aircraft - not slow moving ocean ships.

The fresh IL DIVINO Extra Virgin Olive Oil is then transferred to stainless steel fustis and is stored in complete darkness at room temperature under an atmosphere of inert gas to prevent any degradation of our fresh extra virgin olive oil.

This is entire process always takes a total of less than one month so that when you place an order in the fall each year your olive oil is less than one month from harvest in Tuscany!!! The rest of the year our storage process results in very little loss of any flavor or health benefits such that the IL DIVINO Extra Virgin Olive Oil you receive throughout the year is as close to fresh as is possible.

Just one more reason we believe our IL DIVINO Extra Virgin Olive Oil is the finest Italian Extra Virgin Olive Oil in the world.

Today is one of those special days here at IL DIVINO Extra Virgin Olive Oil.

This year we harvested our olives on October 28th in Tuscany and then cold-pressed on the 29th. The new oil is then allowed a preliminary "settling" for about a week before it is packaged (under inert gas) for transport to here in San Diego. This year there was a bit of a delay with British Airways delaying the flights until our beautiful new olive oil arrived late last Friday night (a week ago) at Los Angeles International Airport.

Once we returned from LAX the new 2021 harvest IL DIVINO Extra Virgin Olive Oil was placed in stainless steel fustis under at inert atmosphere in argon gas. This ensures there will be no loss of quality throughout the year as we fill your orders.

Since we Sold Out of the 2020 harvest about 2 months ago, we have many orders to fill from either our regular subscribers and/or those who want the very freshest IL DIVINO Extra Virgin Olive Oil as soon as possible right after harvest.

So back to Special Days, today is the day we are bottling to fill all these waiting orders for our 2021 harvest EVOO. It may seem silly, but the first day we are able to bottle the new year's IL DIVINO Extra Virgin Olive Oil is always a very exciting one for us!!!!

For those of you receiving your orders this week, we hope you love this year's "oil" as much as we do. Thank you :)

The 2021 Harvest IL DIVINO Extra Virgin Olive Oil arrives in less than one week!!! So excited.
