🐓 Vorwerk Chicken: The Golden Gem of Backyard Farming

The Vorwerk chicken is a rare, dual-purpose breed from Germany, known for its stunning black-and-gold plumage and hardy nature. Developed in the early 1900s, it’s perfect for small farms and backyard setups.

🔍 Quick Highlights:
- Origin: Germany, early 20th century
- Use: Dual-purpose (eggs + meat)
- Eggs: 160–190 tinted eggs/year
- Temperament: Friendly, active, great foragers
- Climate: Adaptable to both heat and cold
- Looks: Buff body with black head, neck, and tail
- Broodiness: Low, but reliable when needed

This breed is not just productive—it’s a showstopper in the coop. Ideal for farmers who want beauty and utility in one bird.

Grateful for the journey of raising our own food! 🌾🐓 This year, we ventured into raising American Bresse chickens for a more sustainable meat flock. Unlike the fast-growing Cornish Cross we raised earlier (ready at just 6-8 weeks with impressive feed conversion), Bresse offer a healthier, homestead-friendly alternative. We processed five Bresse roosters at ~17 weeks, averaging a surprising 4.5 lbs per bird—lanky but mighty! 🙌
We kept one standout rooster and some hens to breed for better feed efficiency while staying true to the Bresse standard. In this video, I’m packing up a rooster using Texas Poultry Shrink Bags (my go-to, despite the late-night struggle—no gloves this time!). 😅 It’s a raw look at the hard work behind our self-sufficient lifestyle. Drop your questions about the Bresse breed or our process below! 🐔

🍳 Meet the mighty quail egg—small but eggstraordinary! These speckled gems pack a punch with up to 5x more iron, plus higher levels of B12, selenium, and antioxidants than chicken eggs, making them a nutrient-dense superfood.
Their thicker shells and the quails’ higher body temp mean a lower salmonella risk, perfect for raw dishes like sushi or mayo.
In traditional Chinese medicine, Coturnix quail eggs are prized for supporting lung health, stabilizing blood sugar for diabetes, and even helping prevent kidney stones with their anti-inflammatory nutrients. Bonus? They’re often hypoallergenic—many folks allergic to chicken eggs can savor these (check with your doc first!).
From Japanese tamago to Russian zakuski and Indian curries, these eggs are a global delicacy, loved for their rich, velvety yolks.

And the Coturnix quail themselves? These pint-sized champs start laying at just 6-8 weeks old, churning out 200-300 eggs a year! They’re quirky little hustlers, zipping around like feathered racecars and chirping soft, trilling songs that sound like a mini jungle symphony. Fun fact: Coturnix were domesticated in Japan centuries ago for both eggs and their charming companionship.
