Nobody on a wine tour ever really thinks about the person pouring. They should.

Two different people at two different wineries. Both of them mid-shift, doing the part of the day that makes a room feel welcoming rather than transactional.

We don't own any of these wineries. We just get to bring people to the good ones.

Private tours are for when the group is the point rather than the other people on the bus.

Kalero is one of the stops we bring in for exactly that — a working farm winery, not a production line. The setting is quiet, the group has room, and the stop can be shaped around the occasion.

These are from three different private tours. A bachelorette, a birthday, and a Tuesday that didn't need a reason.

I don't sell a trip I haven't already taken.

In April I flew to Bordeaux and walked the whole thing — the chateaux, the gravel soils of the Médoc, the cellars, the ship. I ate the meals. I met the people who work there. I found out which stops are worth the morning and which ones look better in a brochure than in real life.

That's what the France 2027 itinerary is built from. Not a catalog. Ten days, Toulouse to Bordeaux, six nights aboard the MS Cyrano de Bergerac and three on land.

Fifteen months out, and I've already done the reconnaissance. That's the job.

People ask me sometimes why I built a tour company around Loudoun instead of somewhere with a bigger name.

I did my WSET training looking at wine regions all over the world. What struck me about Loudoun was that the producers here were figuring out what actually grows well on this soil, on this side of the Blue Ridge, rather than chasing what sells somewhere else. Cabernet Franc, Petit Verdot, Viognier, and now Tannat and sparkling wine, planted because the soil favors them.

That kind of decision-making is what eventually gets a region taken seriously. Decanter noticing this month was not luck. It is two decades of Loudoun winemakers making that same unglamorous choice, one vintage at a time.

Those vines aren't growing like that by accident. Every row is trained along a wire-and-post frame called a trellis — and it's doing more work than it looks like.

It controls how much sun each cluster gets, how the leaves shade the fruit, how easy the row is to work by hand at harvest. Different wineries train their vines differently depending on the grape and the site — it's one of the first things a guide will point out if you ask.

You don't need to know any of this to enjoy a glass. But it's the kind of thing that makes the second glass more interesting than the first.

Ask your guide about the trellising next time — most of them will happily explain it.

Three things happen on just about every 8 Chains North stop.

Someone wanders over to the fence, where the rows of vines run straight out in front of you. Inside, whoever's pouring tells you what's in the glass and where it came from. And the whole group ends up in the barrel room eventually, with nobody in much of a hurry to get back on the bus.

October is the version of Loudoun people picture when they imagine wine country.

Color in the rows, crush happening behind the tasting room, cooler air, and everyone slightly sleep-deprived and slightly elated.

It is also the season that books latest and fills fastest, which is a genuinely annoying combination. September and October dates are on the calendar now.

This was filmed last October, so you know exactly what you'd be walking into.

Firefly Cellars is the kind of stop where people stop checking their phones.

It's one of three on our Catoctin Heritage route — a red barn, a lawn that actually gets used, and a swing that shows up in a lot of tour photos whether we suggest it or not.

Some groups come to sit under the umbrella and talk. Some come twenty-strong for a birthday. Both are a completely normal Saturday here.

Decanter ran a piece on Northern Virginia wine country this month.

Not a passing mention. A real feature, positioning this region as an accessible, increasingly serious wine destination less than an hour from Dulles and DC.

I've spent two years driving these routes, tasting through what these producers are doing, and telling anyone who would listen that this region deserved more attention. It's strange and satisfying to watch one of the wine world's most respected publications say the same thing.

The wineries haven't changed. The wine hasn't changed. What's changed is how many people outside Virginia are starting to notice.
