Bees find unique places to settle into. Two night adventure to get these guys out. About 15’ in the air, in insulation under rafters. It was quite the job, then we covered up the opening so they couldn’t go back in until the owners of the cabin can permanently seal it off. That hole in the third picture with the insulation sticking out is where they were. We used our bee Vac to help suck the bees out after we got all the comb out and into frames.

Before pictures of the hole bees were in, then during after we cut open the tree. Then the empty tree trunk, after we got all the bees out. 5 frames full of brood and honey, with at least 2 queens in it. First time cutting open a tree to do this, but went smoothly! The tree had fallen down from one of the storms this week, so we were able to just cut open as we needed to rescue the bees.

Last evening this was the sight on one of the farms. Mother Nature can be truly beautiful.

Thank you to Kelly Threw for picking up our 4 Nucs for us, then for helping us transfer them to their new homes at Liberty Acres Farm! Nucs are mini hives, with 5 frames, a queen, brood already going (babies), some nector for food and new worker bees, established on regular frames.

Fun fact: Nucs are different than packaged bees, that are just so many pounds of worker bees with a queen that’s in a special container. They eat towards each other through some food and by the time they do, then they will follow the queen, but they have no food, no brood, no comb or anything started. Nucs are the safer route to go compared to a package bees.

When you go from the second picture to the first from one bee sting on the face. Hazard of beekeeping, but we still love the job! Dimitri has taken Benadryl and been icing it since last night to help with the swelling, but about half of his face is swollen up.

Relocated the swarm we caught at Garlish farm to Camp Big Sky! Camp Big Sky has pollinator plots. prairie gras plots and other plots they have planted for habitat for animals, providing plenty of food for the bees! So glad to be working with such a great organization! Giving back to an organization that our youngest may eventually have to utilize, makes us grateful to help them out. We will be taking some more hives out there, we appreciate them setting up a platform for the hives to go on!

Daytime versus nighttime pictures of the swarm from Louisville Slugger Sports Complex. Nighttime is easier to work with them, since the bees are trying to stay warm and are less active than during the daytime. Making it easier to collect the whole swarm!

Went to collect another swarm tonight! This one had about 50,000 bees in the swarm (estimated). Not super hard to collect, but thankful to help save and relocate another hive! Louisville Slugger Sports Complex

Thanks to our friends over at Liberty Acres Farm we have another spot to put our hives at! This will allow more plants to be pollinated, less competition between hives and easier to work! This give was relocated from Canton Big Creek Park that we caught last week!
