I fired someone (part time employee) after 4 days on the job. Let me tell you more!
Something I never thought Iād do. But I donāt regret it one bit.
You know the saying āquick to fire, slow to hireā?
I have always pushed against that saying as a small business owner because I felt that it didnāt have the full picture. It didnāt account for the human nature of life, business ownership and employer that I want to be.
If I am ever going to fire someone, it comes with many chances, many conversations, written notice, etc. But this time it didnāt. It was swift. The 3 strike rule that I have played out quicker than I could have the follow up conversations.
Ive learned that if someone I have employed is actively bringing down my business, they are no longer welcome. In the 4 days this person was in my employ, they gave up every shift, told someone to calm down because they are ādoing too muchā after being excited about working here and told someone else that they āhate it here.ā
Over the last 6 months I have been obsessed over the culture I have in my business. Weeding out those who are toxic, mean and bring the business down - no matter the cost. Those things listed above are absolutely not welcome and not something that I could ātrain out of them.ā
How I didnāt catch it in the interview process? That is something that I need to figure out.
BUT - Iām proud of myself for acknowledging quickly that this person is not meant for here and will cost me so much more than I already spent training them in the long run.
I did them and myself a favor. I stopped wasting both of our time because while my time is valuable, so it theirs.
Business owners: take the statement āquick to fire, slow to hire,ā and reframe it to āquick to action, slow to infection.ā
Donāt let your team be infected. Protect, protect, protect.
