Today, carving pumpkins into jack-o’-lanterns is ubiquitous with Halloween. In the 19th and early 20th centuries, however, chiseling ghoulish grins into turnips was the more common practice (at least in Ireland and other Celtic nations). The spooky tradition was part of Samhain, an ancient pagan festival that marked the end of summer and the beginning of the Celtic new year and long winter ahead. Samhain translates to “summer’s end” in Gaelic. Kicking off at sundown on October 31 and continuing through November 1, Samhain ushered in the transition from the autumn equinox to the winter solstice. During those two days, ancient Celts believed that the veil between life and death was at its narrowest, allowing spirits to roam freely between both realms.

Celts approached this turning point with both anticipation and dread, fearing that they would unknowingly cross paths with wayward fairies, monsters or ancestral spirits. A particularly ominous entity was Stingy Jack, who was believed to have “tricked the devil for his own monetary gain". The folklore says that because of this, God banned him from heaven, and the devil banned him from hell, forcing him to “roam earth for eternity.”

For protection from Stingy Jack and other apparitions, people in the British Isles began carving faces into pieces of produce—particularly turnips, but in some cases potatoes, radishes and beets. Celebrants placed lit candles inside the cavities, similar to the pumpkin jack-o’-lanterns of modern Halloween. They believed leaving the spooky carvings outside their homes or carrying them as lanterns would protect them from harm’s way while offering a flicker of light that could cut through their dark surroundings.

Metal lanterns were quite expensive, so people would hollow out root vegetables. Over time people started to carve faces and designs to allow light to shine through the holes without extinguishing the ember.

However, root vegetable carvings were just one aspect of Samhain. Revelers also built bonfires and used food and drinks as bribes should they come across anything inhuman lurking in the night. Dressing up in costume was a common practice during this raucous event, presaging the costume-wearing tradition of today. Additionally, Celtic priests [or Druids] practiced divination rituals and conducted rites to keep ghouls at bay—but since they didn’t keep written records, many of these practices remain shrouded in mystery.

Over the centuries, Samhain transformed into All Hallows’ Eve, the evening before November 1 and what’s now called Halloween. But the practice of carving jack-o’-lanterns, albeit in a slightly different medium, stuck—and remains an iconic part of the bewitching autumn holiday.

Halloween is one of the few festivals of the calendar year that is still practiced in much the same way as it was for generations. Before electricity, the countryside was a very dark place, adding to the scariness of the festival. 🎃🎃🎃🎃🎃🎃

BREAKING: Supreme Court rules for PennEast, denying states’ rights to protect state lands from fracked gas pipelines, paving the way for PennEast to proceed in New Jersey:

Today the Supreme Court announced its precedent-setting opinion in PennEast Pipeline Co. v. New Jersey--holding that the Natural Gas Act “...authorizes FERC certificate holders to condemn all necessary rights-of-way, whether owned by private parties or States.” This decision paves the way for PennEast to proceed with the New Jersey portion of its project. It also should result in release of legal actions held in abeyance pending this ruling that were filed by the Delaware Riverkeeper Network and others challenging FERC’s approval of the project.

Around noon today, Acre was extracted from their tree sit in the path of the Mountain Valley Pipeline. Today is day 932, and with Acre’s extraction, is the final day of the Yellow Finch blockade.

Wren — who was extracted yesterday — was charged with 1 misdemeanor (interfering with property rights). Acre was charged with 2 misdemeanors (obstruction and interfering with property rights). They are both currently being held without bond.

Nearby, at the end of Cove Hollow Rd, dozens of people gathered to rally in support of the blockade and against MVP.

As Wren stated, “With Acre’s and my arrest, this one instance of resistance, this one physical place that is an enactment of our dreams of another world will fall. But these tree sits were one place out of many that have existed and that will exist, and the flames of resistance cannot be extinguished this easily. The fight continues, and the struggle for a better world always will.”

Anne Lusby-Denham, a member of the Southwest Virginia Poor People’s Campaign, Mountain Valley Watch, and Roanoke Mothers Out Front, added, “I am a community activist and minister’s wife from Roanoke and am very concerned about the State Police extraction team’s removal of the Yellow Finch tree sitters. I do not think it is appropriate for police to be involved in helping the Mountain Valley Pipeline rather than the citizens of Virginia. It was a reckless and dangerous undertaking done for a corporation that is damaging our land, our water, and our communities.

“Neither Governor Northam or agencies such as DEQ are protecting us at all from the damages, and our tree sitters have risked their lives. Our government agencies seem to have no shame, no moral compass, and I am losing respect for all of them!”

The fight against the Mountain Valley Pipeline is not over. Donate to support Wren, Acre, and ongoing resistance: bit.ly/SupportMVPResistance

SAVE SEEDS! Every year we think “we really have to save more seeds,” and every year we end up moving on to the next crop or forgetting to mark certain plants to let go to seed or forget to harvest the seed at the right time. This year we are resolving again to save as much seed as we can. We anticipated huge demand at our trusted seed suppliers (Fedco Seeds , who we love for helping us to source each variety according to the size and type of the seed producer) from home gardeners this year, many of whom seemed to learn last March that even the first day of Spring can be too late to start your garden. We ordered most of our seeds in early December and we’re still playing a bit of catch up, patching together orders to make sure we’re growing all of our favorite varieties. With some help from High Mowing Organic Seeds we’re almost there, but we were feeling nervous pangs about the fragility of our seed and thus food system. It’s really time for small-scale growers to be our own seed protectors. Seed prices are rising every year, treasured varieties are discontinued, seed crops fail, and hybrids owned by multinational corporations involved in unsavory practices are taking over (this is why we don’t grow Hakurei turnips, purple or even sometimes white cauliflower, etc. and begrudgingly purchase Sungold seed). Still, hopeful and forward-thinking folks are not only growing food but growing for seed, prioritizing heirloom/open-pollinated varieties and even cross-pollinating to better adapt plants to their specific growing environment (yes, even your backyard!) For us, growing food has been our most altruistic expression, our greatest hope for humanity, but it’s so starkly inadequate without the simple act of saving seeds. It doesn’t have to just be up to the breeders and the seed companies. We can all do this. It’s time.

We would love to acknowledge our awesome community partners who joined us to create this pilot program for free fresh produce and healthy food distribution in Quakertown with St. Luke's University Health Network , United Way of Bucks County, and Bucks County Opportunity Council! What started as a service for 70 at-risk families quickly tripled in size, and demonstrated a very serious need for better nutritional security for our Upper Bucks neighbors in need. At each event, St. Luke’s medical students, nursing, nutrition and other staff were on hand to bag up the bounty, hand out to recipients, and take the opportunity to promote behavioral nudges towards better health for all. Of course none of this would be possible without our participating Bucks County farmers 🥰 Solebury Orchards, Solly Brothers, Trauger's Farm Market, Stoney Lane Organic Farm, Roots to River Farm, Love Grows CSA, Alderfer Eggs, None Such Farm and Gravity Hill Farm.
This coming Sunday, Oct. 24th we welcome Love Grows CSA to the Horsham Farmers’ Market.

We’re excited to have them join us as they will be bring a wonderful selection of locally grown fruits and veggies, including Spinach, lettuce mix, arugula, Tuscan kale, collards, radishes, salad turnips, sweet potatoes, carrots, beets, green cabbage, sweet red peppers, butternut squash, onions, Jonagold and Fuji apples.

Here’s a little about their farm…

All the vegetables are grown by Ailsa and Brad with holistic methods and standards that far exceed "Organic". We do not spray any synthetic inputs in or around any of our fields or use GMO seeds. Compost, cover crops and rotational grazing feed our soil and our food. We believe that healthy land grows healthy food and healthy people.

Stop by the market to meet Love Grows ❤️ this Sunday from 10 am to 1 pm behind the Horsham Township Community Center, 1025 Horsham Rd., Horsham, PA
