Real Beef will always be in demand!
A few years ago, fake meat was going to save the planet, fix your health, and replace the burger on your grill. Celebrities backed it. Wall Street funded it. The media couldn't stop talking about it.
Then people actually started buying it.
Today, Beyond Meat has lost 95% of its value. Plant-based meat sales have fallen nearly 18% in two years. Impossible Foods has laid off staff. One of the biggest food bets in modern history is unraveling, and the ranchers and cattlemen who were told they were obsolete? They're still here.
But this isn't just a story about a business failing. It's about a labeling fight that's now headed to Congress, a growing pile of research that questions what fake meat actually does to your body, and a beef industry that has spent years pushing back, quietly and loudly, against the idea that a product made in a lab deserves to be called "meat" at all.
Seven states have already banned lab-grown meat outright. A bipartisan bill in the Senate would force every plant-based and cell-cultured product to say exactly what it is on the front of the package. And American consumers? More than 75% of them now say real meat is part of a healthy diet — up from 64% just five years ago.
The story of fake meat's rise and fall is more complicated — and more interesting — than either side wants to admit. We broke it all down.
