I am behind on making posts. So I have some time this morning and I'd like to share what we have been doing on our Cliffside Farm! We have been building fence for the last couple of months on a huge ridge we have. I call it rocky ridge because it has so many rocks on it. Some the size of a small Kia 😂! It's been hot and I know I'm crazy for building a fence when it's hot but it has to be done. The cows are counting on me and if I didn't love what I do I definitely would wait till fall or winter to build. We have made huge progress and should be done in a couple of weeks if all goes well. Lots of good wild grasses on this ridge.

We are grading the next ridge over and should finish in a few weeks. It will have to be disked and planted in October. Lots of work ahead but in the end we will be able to grow our cow herd tremendously. I could do this stuff every day. I can't wait to get cows on this section of land.

Happy Sunday! 🌞 We are busy busy right now on the farm! So thankful to finally be getting caught up on rain! In the last few weeks we have gotten around 5 inches at the Forest City farm. The grass is recovering nicely and the cows and goats are fat and happy. Our Cliffside farm is still behind on rain. The pastures there are taking longer to recover and we are feeding hay there and feed. But the last few days we have got some good showers. We are hoping to finish our biggest pasture yet in the coming weeks and move the Cliffside bunch to a huge ridge we have fenced in. So thankful though to finally be getting some good rain. Hopeful for a good hay crop this fall for us and other farmers.

I tell you I love farming so so much. It brings so much joy to my life. No matter how much I sweat or complain when the sun is hot. I still love it. I work hard at my other business so I can support the farm. But at some point we all need a breather! I am happy to finally be getting a break but on the other hand I am already planning out the work that needs to be done when I get back!!

We are building a new pasture in Cliffside! We just finished the posts this week and will be adding wire in the coming weeks and gates. Then we will begin rotating our cows on it. It is a big step towards expanding the farm and helping manage the drought right now and have more pasture rest time between rotations.

Happy Sunday!! It's been a crazy week on the farm. From castrating two calves on the farm to mowing for w**d control to rotating cows to getting ready for a little vacation.

This last week we mowed almost all of the pastures to help control some w**ds. Mainly dog fennel. It's very invasive. So it's good to mow it once to twice a year to keep it under control. Our fields are growing again and the cows and goats are enjoying it. Their body condition is looking great. I'm looking forward to the rain we might get this coming week to help keep the grass growing. Two of our youngest bull calves were made steers this week. Both will be raised out on the farm for some tasty beef.
Every time we go on vacation there is so much to do. You have to make sure you have folks around to watch the farm while you are away. Then you have to make sure you have plenty of feed available to the animals while you're away. The bigger the farm gets the longer it takes to make sure they are in good shape while we are away. It's a lot of responsibility. But I still enjoy it.

Welcome to the farm Virgil and Erma! This donkey pair are our new livestock guardians at the Cliffside Farm. They will protect the cows and calves from coyotes and dogs. We now have donkeys with both cow herds.

Thank You Thank You Thank You Lord for this rain 🌧️ 🙏! Since the spring it has been very challenging on the farm. We haven't been able to rotate pastures like we normally do. The lack of rain caused us not to get much regrowth and hardly any spring flush. We have had to feed hay along and supplement protein tubs to ensure the cows and calves were getting enough nutrients. It's been very costly. The cows have held their condition but weren't happy they preferred green grass. But there just wasn't any. Both our farms were drying up. We had a couple of Creeks go dry that we have never seen dry up. You will see though in the pictures that they are flowing again as of today. Hay is hard to come by. We decided to sell a few of our calves off a little early to help take pressure off of our cows and our pastures. Then we split the herd and took a few cows to our other farm. So far this has helped so much and with the recent rains our pastures are trying to bounce back. Unfortunately we had to sell our beloved holestein Delilah that we bought when we first got started. She was a great mother. We tried to keep her but she was very destructive. So we had to let her go. But that is part of it. The year isn't over but lots of lessons have been learned and we are continuing to learn as we go. The Lord has been good to us and he is guiding us along the way to our dream. Drought or no drought this farm will continue to persevere as long as we keep God first!
