Spring vineyard work! Took a ride to Humboldt last week for early season work in the Pinot Noir at Elk Prairie Vineyard 🍇

At about 8 inches of growth, we’re shoot thinning - removing excess shoots to dial in the balance of the vine. Each shoot can carry 1-2 clusters, so this step directly sets our crop for the year. You can see the before and after shots here.

We aim for a specific number of shoots per vine to match what the plant can ripen evenly. Too many shoots = too much fruit and diluted flavors. Too few = the vine puts too much energy into vegetative growth.

It’s one of the most important “chores” we do - setting the stage for quality fruit long before harvest.

Adrian, a Humboldt native, has long believed in this region as a gem - pun intended - for great Pinot Noir, amongst other varietals. The commitment to find far-off vineyards and build relationships with small winegrowers in this wild place has paid off since our first vintage.
