What are the best watermaker filters for saltwater desalination? 💧⚓

For yacht watermakers, the best filtration setup isn’t just one filter. Effective seawater desalination relies on the correct pre-filters and reverse osmosis (RO) membrane working together.

🔹 20-micron pre-filters help remove larger sediment and particles from incoming seawater.
🔹 5-micron pre-filters provide finer filtration before the high-pressure RO stage.
🔹 Seawater RO membranes perform the desalination process, separating dissolved salts from the water to produce fresh water.

Using the correct filters — and replacing them when required — helps protect the watermaker system and maintain reliable freshwater production onboard.

At Yacht-Mate, we supply watermaker filters, filter housings, seawater RO membranes and replacement filtration components for marine desalination systems.

Not sure which filters your watermaker needs? Send the Yacht-Mate team your watermaker make and model, and we can help identify the correct replacement filtration.

💧 How long do watermaker membranes last?

Typically, a marine reverse osmosis membrane can provide several years of service - but age alone isn’t the best indicator of when it needs replacing.

The lifespan of a watermaker membrane depends heavily on how the system is operated and maintained.

⚓ What affects membrane life?

💦 Freshwater flushing
Regular flushing helps remove seawater from the system and reduces the conditions that encourage biological fouling.

🔧 Pre-filter maintenance
Clean, correctly maintained pre-filters help protect the RO membrane from sediment and contaminants.

🌊 Feed-water quality
The conditions in which the watermaker operates can significantly affect membrane fouling and overall performance.

🧪 Storage & preservation
If a watermaker will remain unused for an extended period, the membrane may need to be properly preserved according to the manufacturer’s instructions.

So, when should you replace it?

Don’t rely on age alone.

Declining freshwater production, increasing product-water salinity or deteriorating salt rejection are much better indicators that your membrane needs attention.

Good filtration. Correct flushing. Proper maintenance.

All can make a significant difference to the working life of your yacht’s watermaker membranes.

Top 3 Questions We Get Asked Every Season

Question #2
Why Isn’t My Watermaker Producing Enough Water?
It’s one of the most common questions we receive from yacht owners, captains and engineers.
A drop in water production doesn’t always mean your watermaker has failed. More often than not, it’s your system telling you it needs attention.
Some of the most common causes include:
💧 Clogged pre-filters
🧪 Fouled or worn RO membranes
🌊 Changes in seawater temperature or salinity
📉 Low feed water pressure
🔧 High-pressure pump or pressure regulator issues

Routine maintenance and regular inspections are the key to keeping your watermaker operating at peak performance while helping to avoid costly downtime and repairs.
Need replacement filters or membranes?

Visit Yacht-Mate to find a wide range of genuine watermaker filters, membranes and marine water treatment products. If you’re unsure what’s causing the problem, simply get in touch with our team—we’re always happy to provide expert advice and help you get your watermaker back to full performance.

The hardest-working piece of equipment on a superyacht isn’t always the engine.

It’s often the watermaker. 💧

A modern 75-metre superyacht can produce tens of thousands of litres of fresh water every day, quietly turning seawater into safe, fresh drinking water through reverse osmosis.
✅ Every shower.
✅ Every coffee.
✅ Every meal.
✅ Every load of laundry.
It all depends on one critical system.

Without reliable watermakers, even the world’s most luxurious yachts couldn’t remain self-sufficient during extended voyages.
Clean water isn’t just a convenience—it’s what keeps life onboard running.
