Wednesday's WISDOM from the hive . . .
Educating the community about the importance of pollinators in Northeast Indiana. We also keep sustainable beehives in natural & organic environments.
Southwest Honey Co. was founded as an initiative to protect and conserve the bee population in Fort Wayne, Indiana. On a global level the bee population is declining; which if left unaddressed, will drastically change the world as we know it because of all the pollinating the honey bees do for our food and food for our animals. We exist to promote true conservation, education of the outdoors and t
he restoration of wildlife. From our hives we harvest local honey that is sold in support of our apiaries and mission to help the honey bee population. Our beekeeping practices are “bee-safe,” research based and hives are kept naturally without chemicals or unnatural treatments. We have partnered with local conservation “minded” organizations to study, report and address the issues surrounding the honey bee. This includes a number of organizations on a local, state and national level. In 2016, Southwest Honey Co. received a grant from the USDA’s North Central Region SARE (NCR-SARE) to study the “Symbiotic relationship between farmers, ranchers and honeybees through consumer education.” The study will evaluate the direct impact and correlation between education through activity-based educational experiences and the choices consumers make to participate in active conservation of the natural environment in the community and at home. We believe that education is the most effective way to influence and change a community’s perspective on the importance of the honey bee population. In the summer of 2016, the program “Explore the Honey Bee” began. Over 300 children had the opportunity to experience this educational program. “Bees and Tea” and “Bees and Brew”- educational programs offered for adults and seniors, is also a great way for community members to immerse themselves in pollinator education. All three of the educational programs are focused on connecting participants with the environment and ecosystem through the plight of the declining honey bee. These educational experiences include hands-on experiences for children and adults and provide resources to change the future of pollinators. Our organization is made up of volunteers and partners who want to help the honey bee population. We are proud to announce our operation has been brought to life through sponsorships and partnerships with Betterbee, Wheeler’s Bees (Ossian, IN) and other local, regional and national conservation, honey and/ or beekeeping organizations. We are members of the American Beekeeping Federation, Beekeepers of Indiana Association and Northeastern Indiana Beekeepers Association.

Did you know? Each colony has a unique odor so the bees always know where home is. A pheromone is a secreted or excreted chemical factor that triggers a social response in members of the same species.

How can you help save the native bees?
🐝 Avoid the use to pesticides.
🐝 Leave a few bare patches of soil in garden beds for ground nests.
🐝 Plant native plants to your region that flower throughout the season.
🐝 Don't clear out all your "dead" plant material. These stems and limbs are where solitary bees make their nests.
🐝 Learn more about these amazing creatures from organizations like Xerces or Pollinator Partnership.

Don't do your yard clean up too early. There is an abundance of insects that rely on the leaves and dead grass for hibernation before they emerge and benefit nature. 💚

Wednesday's Wisdom from the hive . . . on average, a single honey bee produces 1/12 of a teaspoon of honey over the course of its entire lifetime.

Even bees have bad hair days!
Did you know that honey is really bees winter food? Throughout the warmer months bees will eat pollen, nectar, and some honey, but honey's primary purpose is for the hive to survive winter! This is why beekeepers have to be very careful to leave enough honey for the bees to make it through the colder months.

Today's moment of zen. Watch this carpenter bee with pollen on its legs.
BEEKEEPER SWARM VIEW: Here's what we see when we're rescuing a swarm. If you look close you can watch the bees march right into the hive box we have waiting for them. 🐝 Thanks to the homeowner for calling us instead of an exterminator 🤢, so this colony can be relocated to one of our sustainable apiaries on natural properties and organic farms. Bees often swarm into urban areas, but we're here to help, just give us a call at 260-609-2897. 👍
Local Owners/ Managers: Would this beautiful honey bottle look great in your shop? Many of our current Southwest Honey Co. locations are still closed, so we are looking for just a couple more locations around Fort Wayne to supply and direct customers to. We've found that even boutique, art and gift shops work well for our high-end honey and community mission. Give us a call at 260-609-2897 or leave your phone number below and we'll call you! 🐝 Happy Bees Make The Best Tasting Honey! Our staff are volunteers. All proceeds go towards creating sustainable habitats for pollinators, promoting awareness of their population decline & educating the public on ways they can help. We and the bees thank you for your support!
I didn't think anyone could be happier than us about this sunshine today 🌞... But then we saw these ladies and we were proven wrong! Look how happy they are to be out enjoying the day! This is the perfect day for the bees to take their cleansing flights! #allweneedissun #cleansingflights
