My name is Lacey Perry founder and owner of Country Lace Bernedoodles. My husband, Justin, and I live on a small horse in Middle Tennesee. We specialize in raising quality, intelligent, well socialized Bernedoodles, Miniature Goldendoodles, Bernese Mountain Dogs and Poodles. Our puppies are sure to put thier lovable paw prints all over your hearts for years to come!
The Bernese Mountain Dog was first imported from Switzerland in 1926 (Walter, 2017). They have a long silky coat and have been recognized as one of the “most beautiful breeds”. Berners are aristocratic in appearance and ancient in lineage; officially recognized by the AKC registry in 1937 (Walter, 2017). They are well known for their strength and have a very muscular-sturdy build; wide chest and well proportioned long legs. They are very adaptable to different environments and highly intelligent, which makes training easy.
One reason we chose this breed was because Berners make great family dogs due to their naturally calm and loving personalities. We wanted to breed dogs and feel confident they would transition easily into homes who have young children. Even though the Bernese Mountain Dog can mature to 70-120 lbs, they are gentle giants, super friendly and extremely loyal. The Berner is also a very hardy dog that loves our winters here in Minnesota. They were originally bred to withstand the harsh weather conditions in the Alpines of Switzerland, where they were used for pulling carts on the farm and guarding livestock... Another reason these girls fit so well into our lives! We have a variety of animals including: cattle, horses, pigs, chickens, cats and one donkey, named “Egor”.
A couple reasons we believe Bernese Mountain Dogs make a great cross with the Poodle: 1) they are classified as “low-shedding” and hypoallergenic, 2) they are less sensitive to the warmer weather conditions than the purebred Bernese Mountain Dog, and 3) they live longer, longevity actually increases! The Bernedoodle can live approximately 10-12 years where the Bernese Mountain Dog only lives 6-8 years (Walter, 2017). We do not see nearly as many genetic problems in the Bernedoodle that are common to the Bernese Mountain Dog. We also are firm believers in testing for hip dysplasia in all of our Bernese Mountain Dogs before considering them for breeding. All of our dogs have been health tested using both OFA or PennHip by licensed veterinarians to determine they are healthy for breeding. We also complete DNA testing on all our dogs to check for breed specific genetic diseases using DDC Veterinary.
