38 weeks. As the day gets closer that baby sister might decide to make her appearance, I’ve been working to find farm tasks I can still reasonably help with. Computer stuff obviously, but that’s no fun 🙃 I can keep our inside seeding schedule going and fiddle with plants in the greenhouse. I can still water and pot up and can still walk around and make lists of things for other people to do 🫣Today I thought, mowing! I can do mowing! And I could, kind of. Except my belly is literally just slightly too big for the mower, which meant baby sis got jiggled and the whole endeavor had to be cut a little short. I did manage to mow the outer perimeter of the fields and get our lower field area started, where we will soon (very late!!) plant potatoes as well as winter squash and much later in the year start building a new high tunnel. So exciting! So much happening! Including, hopefully soon, a baby! That’s all. See ya tomorrow 😘

Been a busy week out at the farm! We finished the cat tunnel, planted more peppers, cucs, basil and storage tomatoes (!!) in said tunnel, pruned all our high tunnel tomatoes (they’re getting so big!), did lots of weeding and seeding and other planting and generally soaked up this week of spring thunderstorms, rain, wind and sunshine. Oh and harvest! This week we have some huge gorgeous lettuce heads coming to tomorrow, as well as a variety of cut greens, herbs and lots more plant starts and hanging baskets. See you tomorrow!

Farming is so much more than simply tending seeds, pulling weeds and harvesting vegetables. There’s a lot of that, but there’s also a lot of deconstructing, carrying heavy things, scheming, building… you get the idea. This week our crew has been working on moving our caterpillar tunnel - it’s a structure that we built two years ago on the farm and has helped us immensely as both early season space (to bring veggies to May markets!) and protected late season space for hot crops. That said, one of our main tools to maintain soil health around here is corp rotation. We do our best to never grow the same crops in the same beds each year, with most on a multi-year rotation at minimum, which means changing our maps and crop placement year to year. For us, that also meant this year we needed to change the placement of the cat tunnel. The structure is pretty cool - while fairly durable, they’re meant to be “movable”, and this was our first experience trying to do just that. I was skeptical of how long it would take but our crew crushed it and it went great! Hello new field perspective. The direct seeded area is now all open and we will start planting hot crops into the new covered space in the cat. I’m so grateful for our incredible crew this year!
