Duck-update - We have had a few rough and distracting weeks on the property. The ducks fell victim to a natural predator attack in mid December. We lost one duck immediately, had to cull two others due to extensive injuries, moved one duck into the house hoping she would recover, and had a limping goose and blue Swedish (who have since recovered).
The silver appleyard female that we nursed back to health (back with the flock after 2 weeks isolated inside) suffered a large wound on her backside, some additional cuts, and a punctured lung. We named her "House Duck" and are stoked that she has healed up and is back quacking up a storm with her flock mates.
Given the recent attack, along with finding new homes for some of the males that we have opted not to breed, we decided to make the best use of our space and add some additional adult females to the flock. Newcomers include an adorable mallard, black Swedish, and 10 beautiful muscovy.
The attack, along with the added stress of new "friends" has had an impact on our birds' laying volume. We are hopeful that the ladies will bounce back soon but also understand that egg laying may not pick back up until the days get longer.
Wishing duck friends a Happy New Year!
