A&W root beer float- Keep hearing about this but didn't want to get a 12-pack at current prices. Saw this 20-oz at grocery checkout.

Medium brown/dark caramel color. Good head. Mild aroma, sweet and creamy, almost cream soda taste and mouthfeel.

Taste is more rooty. Definitely root beer float: creamy, but also rooty, a nice balance. Great? No, but good. I'd like to make a float with it. In fact I think I will. A root beer float float.

And: it's okay. Not really much different than a standard float. Perhaps a touch more creamy, and vanilla-y.

Worth checking out.

Ryse Fuel Energy root beer float- Another energy drink, 200mg caffeine. Attractive can. Clear drink, fast-dissipating head, very mild aroma- sweet, with a hint of wintergreen.

Zero root beer flavor. A strange citrusy sweetness with an immediate bitterness. Then sourness from artificial sweeteners. Blech. Not the worst thing I've ever had to drink, or even the worst thing pretending to be root beer flavored, but why bother calling it that? Call it "Maximum Rizz Plus" or whatever and be done with it.

Schmidt's root beer cream puff- Schmidt's is a German restaurant in Columbus, Ohio. They're famous for their cream puffs (and sausages) and recently came out with their own root beer. They always have a monthly special cream puff flavor, and at the state fair this year they have root beer cream puffs. I didn't go just for this, but made sure to get one while there.

I'm not a big cream puff fan, but it is a good cream puff I guess: puffy, dense, a little sweet. And the cream is luscious: real cream, with substantial root beer flavor. It works well as a whole, but I mainly ate the cream, and could have just had a bowl of that. Could have used a knife to get the cream puff apart better, and I tried to eat it while walking which didn't help. Sit down, with a knife and fork and maybe a spoon for the cream.

Schmidt's root beer- Schmidt's is a German restaurant in Columbus, Ohio, famous for their sausages and cream puffs. The root beer is new, and they have a root beer cream puff during the Ohio State Fair which I will try to sample. My friend The Spiffy Cookie gave me a couple of these, available at the fair and at their restaurant.

Love the label. Very dark brown color, very mild aroma. Light, fast-dissipating head. Fairly mild flavors going on, good but not amazing, sweet but not overly so. Sweetened with sugar but I get hints of molasses. Rooty, creamy, a solid middle-of-the-road blend.

Sparkling Ice Caffeine root beer- The family loves the standard Ice drinks, and I saw this at Kroger. I used to be opposed to caffeinated root beers- till we had a kid. This has a little more than a pop but not as much as energy drinks. Controlled dosage, cool.

Tall can, nice design, mild aroma with a hint of a bite to it. Clear, fast-dissipating head. Light caramel color. Better taste than some flavored waters. Slightly sweet, but with sourness in back from artificial sweeteners. A hint of rootiness. Maybe a bit of wintergreen. Pleasant, cold, crisp, refreshing. Better than average for a diet root.

A&W root beer cotton candy- I'd had another brand's root beer and float cotton candies awhile back (Chocolate Storybook) and liked them, especially the float version. For proper sampling purposes I had my daughter try them too, and we both enjoyed them.

Saw this in a discount store. Its "best by" date is today, so I had to try it right away. It has condensed a little but is still fluffy. Very mild aroma, no hint of root beer. But it's there in the flavor: a little rooty, a hint of a bite, sweet but not crazy. Very pleasant, and the kid agrees. Worth picking up for yourself or as a gift.

250 root beer- Just in time for the 4th this weekend. The editor at Columbus Foodletter put me on the track of this, now at Weiland's but hopefully available all over. Made by Kast Iron Soda Works in northeast Ohio.

Cool label. Classic bottle. Pours out dark brown with a fast-dissipating head. Nice rich aroma, classic rootiness with maybe brown sugar. Taste is pretty classic as well. Rooty and slightly creamy. Some sourness in the background, not very sweet up front. Hints of cherry? Solid drinkable brew, and would make a good float.
