Here’s my State Convention recap!

I began the week off by receiving my Lone Star Degree. The Lone Star Degree is the highest degree that Texas FFA can bestow upon an individual. I was also able to witness history as the 2023 Texas FFA Business Session included 15 proposed amendments, the most in a long time, that members were able to express opinions and cast votes on. I ended the week by having my Homesite Evaluation team and I being recognized for being State Champions. Overall it was a great week!!

If you live in East Texas you’ve probably seen fields of crimson clover. Crimson clover is not only beautiful, it is beneficial to the soil. It provides nitrogen to the soil and helps the soil hold moisture. These pictures are of the field in front of our house. Our dad put seed out years ago and it has multiplied.

Happy meat fact monday! Did you know hard hats, smogs, gloves, hairnets, and other PPE is required to work at a meat processing facility? These regulations are enforced by the USDA, and ensure that our meat is contaminate free for safe consumption!

When my sister was in high school we competed in meat judging competitions together and we were/are always required to follow these PPE guidelines.

It’s calving season! When the new calves are born, our dad checks to see if they are male or female. We have no need for bull calves, so we band or cut their testicles to make them a steer. This improves the quality of the finished beef.

Meat Fact Monday!

Here’s a little bit of meat history! The Federal Meat Inspection Act of 1906 (FMIA) was enacted to prevent adulterated or misbranded meat and meat products from being sold as food and to ensure that meat and meat products are slaughtered and processed under sanitary conditions.

The last 3 days I participated in the Houston Livestock Show and Rodeos Junior Commercial Steer Contest. I raised a pen of 3 steers from August until now. My steers were graded and the auctioned. I had to turn in a record book electronically before the first day of the contest. As part of the contest I also had to do a closeout, which consists of lots of math to determine how much my steers gained, how much feed it took to gain weight, and to see if I made a profit. I also took a test over anything in the beef industry, a meat ID quiz, a meat facts quiz, and an interview with 3 people from the beef industry asking me questions. I learned a lot and had a good time with my friends from Gilmer and friends from other schools.
