USDA Confirms First U.S. Case of New World Screwworm Since 1966 🚨

The USDA has confirmed the first U.S. case of New World Screwworm (NWS) in nearly 60 years after larvae were discovered in a 3-week-old beef calf in Zavala County, Texas. The infestation was found in the calf’s umbilical area and later confirmed by the USDA National Veterinary Services Laboratories.

The affected ranch is located near the Texas-Mexico border, marking the first confirmed U.S. detection during the current northward spread of New World Screwworm through Mexico and Central America.

In response, USDA and Texas animal health officials have implemented quarantines, increased surveillance, and additional trapping efforts in the area. No additional cases have been reported at this time.

Producers are encouraged to closely monitor newborn calves and animals with wounds and contact their veterinarian if they observe anything suspicious.

The California Rangeland Trust recently celebrated a major conservation milestone at Sardella Ranch in Tuolumne County, marking the protection of 100 ranches conserved across California.

The event brought together ranching families, conservation partners, and supporters to recognize the long-term impact of voluntary conservation easements and the importance of keeping California’s working rangelands intact for future generations.

This milestone reflects decades of collaboration with ranching families who have chosen to permanently protect their land while continuing to actively manage it for cattle production, wildlife habitat, clean water, and open space. Sardella Ranch itself is one of these conserved properties, contributing to a statewide effort that now spans hundreds of thousands of acres of working lands.

The celebration highlighted not only the number of ranches but the broader story behind it: generations of stewardship, family legacy, and the ongoing commitment to preserving California’s agricultural heritage and open landscapes.

A meaningful moment for California ranching and conservation alike.

A recent episode of the Nebraska Farmcast from the University of Nebraska–Lincoln’s Center for Agricultural Profitability highlights key strategies cow-calf producers can use to improve profitability based on data from the University of Minnesota’s FinBin Livestock Analysis Tool.

The discussion breaks down what sets the top 20% of cow-calf producers apart, showing a significantly higher gross margin compared to lower-performing herds.

Key takeaways include:
• Strategic calf marketing, including transferring calves into stocker or feedlot systems to spread risk and generate income at different times of the year
• Participation in government programs (such as drought assistance and conservation programs), which contributed meaningful supplemental income
• Strong reproductive performance, with fewer open cows and lower death loss leading to more pounds sold per cow
• More efficient feed strategies, including targeted use of alfalfa hay and better forage testing to match nutrition needs more accurately

Overall, the data reinforces that profitability comes from a combination of risk management, herd health, nutrition planning, and utilizing available programs.

For producers, these insights offer practical ways to evaluate where small management changes may lead to meaningful improvements in long-term profitability.

Key discussions included Animal Disease Traceability (ADT), livestock health concerns such as New World Screwworm, Farm Bill priorities, labor challenges facing agriculture, and updates to the Packers and Stockyards Act. Members also emphasized the importance of continued funding for electronic identification (EID) tags to ensure compliance programs are not treated as unfunded mandates.

Throughout the Fly-In, members met directly with lawmakers and agency leadership to share real-world impacts from across the livestock marketing sector and advocate for policies that support rural communities and the future of the industry.

The California Department of Fish and Wildlife (CDFW) has released several new updates related to California’s gray wolf population, including new pack designations, updated territory mapping, and depredation reporting.

According to CDFW’s Quarterly Wolf News report, California currently has 12 known wolf packs, including three newly recognized packs based on six months of consistent presence in their regions:

🐺 Newly named packs:
• Interstate Pack — northern Modoc County
• Whitehorse Pack — western Modoc & eastern Siskiyou counties
• Long Valley Pack — eastern Sierra, eastern Plumas & southern Lassen counties

CDFW has also updated its wolf pack territory map, which now includes an additional “area of wolf activity” in central Sierra County where multiple wolves have recently been detected.

In addition, the 2026 Wolf-Livestock Depredation Report has been updated, showing:
• 5 confirmed wolf depredations of livestock
• 5 probable depredations since the last reporting period (through February 20)
• 26 total confirmed or probable depredations in the first three months of 2026

These updates are part of CDFW’s ongoing monitoring and reporting efforts as gray wolf populations continue to expand in California.

For more details, producers and stakeholders are encouraged to review the full reports through CDFW.

UC-Berkeley and UC Cooperative Extension are seeking input from livestock producers and California residents on the future of wolf–livestock compensation.

This survey is part of the California Department of Fish and Wildlife (CDFW) ongoing review of the current wolf-livestock compensation pilot program, established in 2021, and is intended to help gather feedback to improve the program moving forward.

The survey:
• Is anonymous
• Takes approximately 20 minutes to complete
• Is open to livestock producers and interested parties living in California
• Will close on June 11

Please note: this is a separate survey from the one distributed by UC in July 2025. All responses will be securely stored at UC and only shared in aggregate form with CDFW and the public.

If you are a producer or stakeholder, your input is extremely valuable in shaping future policy and programs affecting California livestock operations.
