Top bar frames and foundationless brood frames give bees the chance to build comb the way nature intended. Letting bees draw their own brood comb can support healthier hive behavior, natural cell variation, and stronger colony expression.

Over time, wax absorbs pesticides, miticides, and environmental chemicals. It can also harbor fungal spores and disease pathogens. Old dark brood comb may look productive, but it can quietly become a storage site for years of contamination.

That’s why rotating equipment and cycling out old brood comb matters. My intentions with my horizontal hive is to provide top-bar frames for their brood body (where they raise baby bees) that will be rotated out each season (a few frames a year) and they'll draw out fresh wax as they build spring population. The cordage is soaked in beeswax and put on the bottom of the bar to give them a guide of where to build their comb that will be more manageable for me.

I still plan to use plastic frames for the honey frames as they are easier for collection and spinning.

Excited to see how it all works out! πŸ’›πŸπŸ―

Building a horizontal hive together even though he thinks it's a bad idea. My favorite thing about beekeeping is trying new things...changing things, playing with ideas, and learning something new each season πŸ’›πŸ

He can have the commercial uniform mindset (it obviously makes more sense) but I love that I still get to explore beekeeping of my own.
