Yesterday was all about flower beds, tearing out undesirable (to me) plants, cutting back those past prime, planting seedlings to fill gaps, weeding, etc

Not finished by any means, this is definately a long term work in progress. I am actively adding more Native plants & both medicinal and culinary herbs. Removing the undesireable non-native plant varieties is an on-going challenge! And while they will never be a 100% Native gardens, my goal is greater than 80%.

So haven't updated on the orphan piglets in a bit. Farmed out a few, lost a few, and was left with one lonely girl, we'll call her OrphanAnnie.

One of my sows gave birth recently (2 live, 1 died w/in a day) and so I decided to ...introduce Annie, hoping to at least give her a friend. Started slow, because there weren't the resources left to graft her as you would normally, and she is weeks older than the newborn piglet.

So I devised a plan...putting OrphanAnnie in the pen with Lil Red and her piglet for approximately 20 min to an hour, two days in a row. She didn't attack it or otherwise outright reject it, was mildly curious at best. So that gave me hope.

YESTERDAY, when I went to put the piglet in the pen for a little social time, Lil Red went ballistic...OrphanAnnie was squealing like mad, and Red did not like that one bit. Huffing and ramming the pen gate, to try to get to the squealing piglet. Previous days she was unbothered by the racket, so this was actually a VERY good sign.

For everyone's safety given the dramatic change in temperament, I created an escape portal in the neighboring pen for OrphanAnnie to travel back and forth, fully inspected and cleared for use by Recon Kitty, our on-site self-appointed safety manager. 😉

I made frequent checks throughout the day to make sure all was well...but largely let them be.
