I had a wonderful time at the Kentuckiana Poultry Club Show this past weekend in Charlestown, IN. The show was well run and organized. The staff were all fabulous and friendly! It was a fun filled day and offered me plenty of great learning experiences!
For those that know me, I don't get out much so for me it's like being a kid in a candy store šŸ˜
This show had the biggest showing of Belgian d'Anvers I have experienced so far. There were 5 exhibitors, 19 total d'Anvers competing and with 6 beautiful varieties, the quail was the largest group (12)!
I had hopes for "Bunny" my Blue Quail, d'Anvers pullet to do well in her variety however she was the only entry in the blue quail color. I did not realize that the blue quail variety had actually completed it's process of being accepted by the APA earlier this year. I was thrilled to say the least to see she was able to compete for higher awards in the show and made it to Champion Row!!

Belgian d'Anvers pullet - blue quail :
Best Variety (1), Best of Breed (19 w/ 5 exhibitors) & Champion RCCL!!!
I am also very pleased to take RV with a quail pullet!
Belgian d'Anvers pullet - quail :
Reserve Variety (12 w/3 exhibitors).

Our little Sugar is anxiously awaiting a few brooder mates of it's own. This sweetheart was a lone hatch from our fertility test of bantam Columbian Rocks. Sugar has had play dates with our BT White Japanese babies but is eager for some friends with longer legs 🤣

Don’t be the reason someone quits!

There’s a lot I can say about this subject, but rather than call-out those specific individuals, I would rather just encourage everyone as a whole, to DO BETTER.

It’s hard enough to keep a flame burning. Enthusiasm & excitement are easy to s***f out, and often don’t reignite.

Don’t punish those that are trying. Your words and actions hold more power than you realize, and if you act poorly towards someone, that little bit of ā€œtryā€ can easily be s***fed out.

While it is impossible to please everyone, it is not impossible to simply be a good person.

Do better.
Be better.
Help More.

šŸ“ 10 Things I’ve Learned in My First Year of Silkie Breeding 🐣

1. High chick mortality is NOT normal. If 30–50% of your chicks die, that’s not ā€œjust Silkies.ā€ That’s husbandry, genetics, incubation, or all three.

2. Don’t assist with hatching. If they can’t get out on their own, they’re not meant for your breeding program. Harsh? Yes. Correct? Also yes.

3. I can’t run a chicken hospital. If a bird needs constant intervention to survive, it’s not breeding stock. That’s the job description. Not cruelty.

4. Soft culling and hard culling are both necessary. Pet-quality placement is still a cull. Hard culls are sometimes the only humane choice. Avoiding culling creates weak lines and a whole lot of heartbreak.

5. A big following does not mean someone is an ethical breeder or produces high-quality birds. Social media clout doesn’t build type, structure, or genetic stability.

6. A rooster will make or break a line. You can have amazing hens—pair them with the wrong roo and you’re breeding disappointment.

7. If you have $150 to spend, buy the pullet, not the eggs. Hatching eggs are a gamble. A pullet is an investment.

8. QUARANTINE. QUARANTINE. QUARANTINE. No exceptions. No shortcuts. No ā€œbut she looks healthy.ā€ Your best birds deserve your best boundaries.

9. Coccidiosis treatment matters. Pantacox gives dramatically better outcomes than Corid. Once you’ve used it, you won’t go back.

10. Breeding trios and quads are gold. Control your genetics, rotate hens, track outcomes.

✨ BONUS✨
Long-time breeders aren’t ā€œgatekeeping.ā€ They’re tired. Many have been burned, used, or drained. If someone mentors you, pour back into them. Respect their time, ask good questions, and show gratitude.

Monday Motivation!

Despite what everyone says, you don't need to have everything put together. Every strong flock, herd, or project starts with one simple habit. Showing up. Not perfectly. Not with everything figured out. Just consistently showing up for your animals.

Some days that means getting chores done before the sun is up. Other days it means taking five minutes to write down a weight, a hatch date, or a note about something that caught your eye. Progress in your animals is almost never instant. It is built through generations of work and small decisions that add up.

Whether you are raising poultry, trying to win an award at a show, working on a 4H project, managing a breeding program, or just trying to stay organized this season, give yourself credit for the effort you make today. Every small action is progress that can move you forward.

Despite what everyone says, you don't need to have everything put together. Every strong flock, herd, or project starts with one simple habit. Showing up. Not perfectly. Not with everything figured out. Just consistently showing up for your animals.
