What was I saying about the difference knowing your farmer makes? Just this last week?
Do you have someone to call if you have a question about food’s path to your table?

The FDA gave an egg recall that started last month over salmonella concerns its highest-risk designation, meaning that eating the eggs could cause “serious adverse health consequences or death.” Read more: https://nyti.ms/4x1h2B1

There was a time when “Know Your Farmer” simply meant knowing where your food came from.

It means something even bigger now.

We’ve entered a world where AI can write articles, summarize research, answer questions, and sometimes confidently present information that simply isn’t true. Unless you already know how to verify it, it can be almost impossible to tell the difference.

That’s one reason why lived experience is becoming more valuable, not less.
Know your farmer and knowing where your food comes from is just the beginning. This is one place where accountability makes a big difference.

*Thank you Karen Rice for all the work you did to allow me to take a quick photo of your riotous glorious flowers this summer!

Knowing where your answers come from ~ When you ask us why we move our chickens into the woods in summer…
-or why our livestock guardian dogs sleep all afternoon…
or why winter eggs sometimes have cloudy whites…
You ou’re not getting an answer assembled from thousands of pages on the internet.

You’re getting the answer from the people who were standing in the pasture when we noticed it.

The first time our new puppy, Teton found a mud puddle, I questioned every decision that led us to getting white livestock guardian dogs. This is a terrible plan- who has time to wash a FARM DOG?!? Tomorrow she’ll do it again. I went home working out when/how/where I’d wash her in the next days.

She was about three months old (several years ago), & had discovered that puddles are clearly the greatest discovery since dog treats. By the end of the afternoon she was the color of chocolate milk. Alas.

I remember looking at her saying, “Well… so much for the white dog.”

The next morning I walked out to do chores, and there she was at the fence… Bright WHITE!

No bath.
No brushing.
Clearly she had a secret midnight spa appointment.

Her coat had shed almost all the dried mud on its own!
I still think it’s one of the coolest things about livestock guardian dogs.

Now I can’t imagine Teton, Everest, or Denali any other way.

🐕 Have you ever been completely wrong about something you thought you knew? Farming gives us fascinating moments every week.

Photo of Denali -around 3 months who had just found a mud-puddle to his delight after a rainstorm, and heat wave. I didn’t even recognise him… next morning - all clean!

So… livestock guardian dogs are… self-cleaning? Yep.

It sounds made up. A giant white dog rolls in mud, splashes & submerges in field puddles, disappears for a nap…

…and by the next morning they’re bright white again.

Our Maremmas do this all the time. Their unique double coat sheds dirt as it dries, helping them stay surprisingly clean despite living outside year-round.

Pretty fabulous if you ask me.

Have you ever watched your dog do something that made you think, “How is that even possible?” Tell us below!
That’s a thing? Yep!

Cheep cheep!

The crickets seem a little louder. Goldenrod is just beginning to brighten the fields roadsides. The gardens are overflowing, and before long the school buses will return to country roads.

Summer isn’t over—not by a long shot… but the calendar has turned yet another page.

If you need us, we’ll be in the fields chasing the shade and marvelling at summer sunsets.

That was a lot!
Yesterday brought sudden, drenching rains that turned paths into streams and fields into puddles within an hour!
Alexandra was a walking swimming pool by the time I got back into my car after the first bout.
It was the kind of rain that makes you pause under the trees in the forest… dripping wet, next to a favorite goat, and simply watch.
